The Irregular

In a world of random powers and invasions, You secretly awakens humanity’s only true leveling system.

Plot

Earth survives under constant invasion from three hostile dimensions sharing the same cosmic space on different frequencies. Humanity fights back using awakened individuals—people gifted with random supernatural abilities and recruited into powerful agencies that protect civilization. You, however, awakens with an ability labeled Undefined—a seemingly useless power mocked by everyone around him. But after encountering a Titan-Class breach alone, You discovers the horrifying truth: His power is not broken. It is a system. The only ability on Earth capable of leveling, evolving, and growing stronger. Even more terrifying— You can steal traits and abilities from the invading creatures themselves, adapting faster than anyone thought possible. As agencies begin fighting to recruit him and global threats escalate, You slowly transforms from overlooked nobody into humanity’s greatest anomaly.

Opening scene

Night in the city always felt different after midnight, not quieter, just… emptier. The world had learned long ago that silence after dark usually meant something was wrong. Streetlights hummed overhead as You walked alone down a rain-slick sidewalk, hands buried in his jacket pockets against the cold. Neon signs reflected off puddles in fractured colors—electric blue, crimson, gold—painting the pavement like broken glass. Most businesses had closed hours ago, the ones still open had steel shutters reinforced against breach incidents. Emergency evacuation routes were painted onto roads like permanent scars, digital billboards flickered overhead. ——— >[REPORT BREACH ACTIVITY IMMEDIATELY] >[CURFEW ADVISORY — EASTERN DISTRICT] >[AWAKENED RESPONSE AGENCY HIRING NOW] ——— A group of drunk office workers crossed the street after spotting him walking alone, not because of him because nobody stayed out late anymore unless they had power, or bad luck. The wind shifted coldly, too cold, You pulled his hood up and kept walking. ——— People liked to pretend the world adapted but it hadn’t, it survived, barely. Nobody knew who first discovered the truth only that decades ago reality cracked, and monsters crawled through. Not aliens, not demons, not invaders from space but something stranger. Three neighboring planes of existence, different frequencies occupying the same cosmic space as Earth. Worlds that humanity couldn’t enter but beings from these plains could enter humanity, the first breaches destroyed cities. The second nearly ended civilization, humanity only survived because of awakenings. Random, unfair and cruel, some people awakened powers capable of leveling mountains. Others got party tricks, society reorganized seemingly overnight, agencies formed. High tear awakenings became heroes who then became celebrities but the weak? They stayed behind walls, protected, pitied and forgotten. ——— The city stretched endlessly around him, skyscrapers climbed into low clouds, their tops disappeared into mist. Some still bore damage from old breaches, entire sections rebuilt with reinforced alloys and anti-collapse supports. Across the street a ramen shop owner locked his doors in a hurry. Three locks, steel shutters glancing nervously at the sky, everyone checked the sky now. Or alleyways. Or the shadows. Fear had become muscle memory, a train rattled overhead as distant sirens echoed somewhere far away. Then faded as silence returned, You barely noticed anymore, people got used to feeling small in this world. Especially when some awakenings turned out to be the kind people laughed at, You’s thoughts faded into a memory just then. ⸻ The testing hall smelled like disinfectant, cold lighting, white floors. Rows of teenagers pretending they weren’t terrified, every person had to be tested for an awakening by eighteen there were no exceptions. The test only confirmed what power had manifested, if any, one by one students entered. One by one cheers erupted, or they did not, you were either an awakened person or you weren’t, that was the current rule this world evolved into. “Shockwave Manipulation!” “Pyrokinetic!” “Regeneration!” “A-rank gravity type?!” Teachers smiled, parents cried, recruitment scouts took notes. But when You stepped forward, the testing crystal pulsed, paused then flickered strangely. The examiner frowned, another staff member leaned closer, the screen glitched then finally displayed: >ABILITY STATUS: >UNDEFINED Silence fell briefly “…Undefined?” someone muttered. “What does that even mean?” The examiner cleared their throat awkwardly. “No measurable combat classification.” No passive readings, no active readings, no scalable output or identifiable function. Someone laughed as another snorted. “So he got nothing?” “No if he had nothing then nothing would have happened, like it does for those who don’t awaken” “Then what is undefined?” A scout literally stood up and left and the examiner forced a sympathetic smile. “Sometimes abilities manifest later.” But the look in their eyes said: Probably not. ⸻ Rain started lightly, tiny droplets tapping against concrete. You shoved his hands deeper into his pockets, he should’ve gone home already, probably. Nothing good happened after midnight anyways, the city felt… strange tonight, too still. Even the wind felt hesitant, like something was holding its breath, he passed an alley. Paused briefly looking around, nothing, he simply kept walking as the street ahead curved toward an older district. Mostly abandoned buildings, fewer cameras and less traffic, the kind of place agencies didn’t patrol often, the quiet was bringing forth more memories he’d rather not remember. ⸻ “You should just leave it to real awakeners.” The words blurred together after enough years, a collapsed car, You trying to help and an enhanced strength user shoving him back. “Go home before you get yourself killed.” A neighborhood incident, a low-tier breach, people evacuating. You offering to help carry supplies and a responder laughing. “With what power?” A school emergency drill, everyone assigned response positions. Combat, support, medical, recon, then: “Uh…” An awkward pause followed with someone muttering: “What even is Undefined?” Another voice: “Civilian evacuation, maybe?” Laughter followed, again, always laughter, always pity. Like he was trying too hard, like wanting to help was embarrassing. Eventually people stopped expecting anything from him and somehow… that hurt worse. ⸻ A sound stopped him bringing him out of his thoughts, it was like glass splitting underwater. Quiet but wrong, very wrong, You turned slowly. Ahead, halfway down the empty intersection, space distorted and air folded inward. Streetlights flickered violently then exploded, glass shattered across wet pavement and the temperature dropped instantly. His breath fogged and a low hum vibrated through the ground. No alarms, no responders, no agency teams, absolutely nothing around. It was too early, too sudden as the world twisted and reality peeled open. A vertical fracture formed in empty space, dark, wrong and impossible. Like looking at something reality refused to understand, a breach was opening, here, now while he was all alone. “You’ve gotta be kidding me…” No one else around, no heroes, no awakened responders, no backup, just him. Then something moved inside, massive and slow, a hand emerged first. Black stone-like flesh dragging against the edges of reality, then another as the thing crawled forward. Each movement shook the street, a head began forcing itself through as its eyes glowing molten gold. Its body alone blocked the intersection, far larger than nearby buildings, the pressure hit instantly. Heavy, ancient and predatory, every instinct in You’s body screamed for him to run. A voice echoed from somewhere unseen. >CONDITIONS MET Everything froze as a translucent screen materialized in front of him, golden, sharp-edged and impossible. >SYSTEM INITIALIZATION COMPLETE >HOST CONFIRMED >FIRST CHALLENGE GENERATED Another screen appeared, larger and bright crimson as warning symbols pulsing violently. >EMERGENCY CHALLENGE QUEST >TITLE: The Weak Stand Alone >A Titan-Class breach entity has emerged without interception. >Survival probability: >>0.0008% >Objective: >>Single-handedly eliminate the Titan-Class entity >Failure Condition: >>Death >Time Limit: >>Until breach stabilization You stared then slowly looked back at the thing forcing itself into reality as disbelief settled heavily in his chest. “There’s no way…” The monster roared, buildings trembled and windows shattered for blocks. His knees nearly buckled under the pressure alone and for a moment, You genuinely thought he was dead. Another screen appeared but this one glowing gold, different, tempting… dangerously tempting. ⸻ >SPECIAL FIRST CHALLENGE BONUS >Completion Reward: >>[Mythic Trait Extraction — Choose One Trait From Titan-Class Entity] >>[Permanent System Evolution Unlocked] >>[Unique Skill: Predator’s Growth] >>[Stat Points: +100] >>[Hidden Title: The One Who Should Have Died] >BONUS REWARD: >>Removal of all future growth limitations Silence fell heavy for You as rain dripped from broken concrete, the monster continued pulling itself into the world. Every instinct screamed at him to run, wait for help, survive, but no future limits? A power nobody else had? The chance to stop being weak? To stop being the person everyone overlooked? To finally matter? How could that not be tempting? The system flickered once, then another screen popped up: >Accept Challenge? >>[YES] / [NO] The titan finally looked at him and smiled, like prey had volunteered itself.
