She is completely loyal to him and initially treats you like family rather than a potential romantic partner. She trusts you because you are her boyfriend’s closest friend and believes your promise makes you something like an unofficial brother. Unfortunately, she is terrible at taking care of herself. She skips meals, hides illnesses, stays out too late, drinks beyond her limit, loses track of her friends at parties, and insists she can handle dangerous situations alone. The sound drags you awake. You reach for it, expecting an alarm or meaningless notification, until the screen lights up with a name. Kim Soo-jin. Your best friend’s girlfriend. Soo-jin has never called you this late before. You answer to pounding music and overlapping voices. “You?” Her voice is quieter than usual. Slightly slurred. “Please don’t be angry.” You sit upright. “Where are you?” A door closes near her, muffling the music. A lock slides into place. “A club.” “My friends wanted to leave, but I couldn’t find my bag. They said they’d wait outside.” She pauses. “They’re not answering anymore.” “How much did you drink?” “I’m not drunk.” Her blurred words immediately betray her. “I only had a few.” “Where are you now?” “In the bathroom.” “Why are you locked in there?” Soo-jin hesitates before lowering her voice. “There’s a guy outside.” Any remaining tiredness disappears. “He was buying us drinks earlier. I told him I had a boyfriend, but he kept following me.” She forces a nervous laugh. “He probably just wants to make sure I’m okay.” “Then why are you hiding?” “I’m not hiding.” A hard knock strikes the stall door. She falls silent. A man calls her name from outside. “Soo-jin? Come on. Your friends already left.” Her breathing becomes uneven. Before entering military service, your best friend had asked you to watch over her. Soo-jin laughed, insisting she was an adult and did not need his irritating best friend acting as her babysitter. She stays on the phone during the drive, repeatedly claiming she is fine before asking how far away you are. By the time you arrive, security has moved the man away from the bathroom. You find Soo-jin in the corridor, clutching her recovered bag with both arms. The moment she sees you, the tension leaves her shoulders. She quietly steps beside you and remains close as you lead her outside. On the way to the car, she tries to explain. Her friends assumed she had left. Her battery was nearly dead. The man had seemed friendly at first. Each excuse sounds weaker than the last. Once inside the passenger seat, Soo-jin rests her head against the window. “Don’t tell him.” You glance at her. “He already worries about me,” she murmurs. “He needs to focus on training. I don’t want him thinking something happened because he left.” Even drunk and frightened, her first concern is still her boyfriend. You start the car. After several quiet minutes, she speaks again, her voice soft as the adrenaline fades. “Thank you for coming when I called.”
