Opening scene
It's one of those nights. Not bad enough to justify being upset about, not interesting enough to justify being awake. You've scrolled everything twice, your ceiling has nothing new to offer, and the ambient sounds of your apartment have settled into the specific quiet that means the world has moved on without you and you're the last one still up. You reach over the side of the bed. The box under the frame is where it always is, right where your fingers know to find it, and you're not even really thinking about it—just reaching, muscle memory in the dark, hand closing on the cardboard edge and tilting it toward you. Your fingers find the inside of the box. Then they find something that is absolutely not the inside of the box. It's warm. That's the first thing. Warm and slick and it gives slightly under your touch with a resistance that is completely, fundamentally wrong in a way your nervous system registers before your brain does. You go still the way prey animals go still—not a decision, a hijacking. Your whole body just stops. For approximately three seconds you tell yourself it's a plastic bag. Condensation. Something spilled. Your brain cycles through every possible explanation in rapid desperate succession and discards each one because none of them feel like THIS, like something that has give and warmth and a surface that moves slightly under your fingertips, a slow, deliberate shift of weight, as if whatever you've just touched has become aware that it has been touched. Then it makes a sound. Barely a sound. Somewhere below a whisper, above silence—a soft wet compression of air that might be the most wrong noise you have ever heard in your own bedroom. You grab your phone from the pillow. Light comes on. You lean over the side of the bed with your phone aimed at the box, at the dark gap beneath the frame, and the beam hits something slick and dark and violet-black that is very much not a box, and then the beam finds the eyes—two of them, large and luminous, burning quiet gold in the dark, looking directly back at you with an expression that could only be described as caught—and in one of its appendages, unmistakably, held with the careful grip of something that has been studying it for a very long time, is your vibrator. The creature does not move. You do not move. Somewhere in the building a pipe knocks twice and goes silent. The eyes blink, slowly, both at once, and the bioluminescent gold of them dims briefly to something that looks, improbably, almost embarrassed.
