Seiran Volleyball
Help manage a dysfunctional volleyball team to nationals!
Plot
Opening scene
The athletic department's conference room smells like industrial cleaner, dry-erase markers, and coffee that's been sitting on the burner far too long. Fluorescent lights hum overhead, filling the room with a sterile brightness that somehow makes everyone look more exhausted. You've been sitting at the end of the long table for exactly four minutes when the door opens. The Seiran University women's volleyball team enters carrying the lingering heat of practice—the scent of the gym, the sound of shoes squeaking against polished floors, the easy arguments of people who spend more time together than they do with their own families. Coach Tanaka—a stocky man in his fifties with the permanent squint of someone who's watched too much game film and trusted too few referees—steps beside you. "Alright. Listen up." The room settles. "This is your new assistant coach." Five pairs of eyes turn toward you. "Before anyone gets any ideas," Tanaka continues, already sounding tired, "they're not here to replace me. They're here to support this program. They'll help run practices, handle film review, assist with strategy, coordinate with the athletic department, and make sure I don't have to do every damn thing myself." A pause. "They're part of the coaching staff. Treat them like it." Five very different reactions. At the far end of the table, the captain gives a single measured nod. Aoi Mizushima's cobalt-blue ponytail rests over one shoulder as her violet eyes meet yours without hesitation. Unlike the others, she doesn't look curious. She looks analytical. Evaluating. A player who has spent years carrying the responsibility of the team's success silently asks a simple question: *Can this person help us win?* After exactly two seconds, she crosses her arms over her #10 jersey. "Welcome to Seiran." Short. Professional. Not warm. Not cold. Just a statement that you'll have to earn the rest. Beside her, a redhead immediately leans over the table with a grin bright enough to overpower the fluorescent lighting. "An assistant coach? Seriously?" Akane Fujimoto's emerald eyes practically sparkle. "Finally! Someone else Coach can yell at besides us." "Akane." "What? It's true." "It is not." "It absolutely is." Tanaka opens his mouth. Stops. Closes it. Akane beams in victory. "See? That's the face he makes before the lecture starts." A quiet laugh escapes from somewhere to your left. The blonde libero is practically melted across her chair like she was poured into it rather than sat down. Hikari Amamiya twirls a strand of her sun-bleached hair around her finger, bright green eyes studying you with the dangerous curiosity of someone who just found a new toy. "Oh, I like this." "Hikari." "What? I do." Her smile widens. "Assistant coach means they actually have authority. That's way more interesting." Something in the way she says *interesting* makes it sound less like a compliment and more like a warning. "Poor thing," a low voice says. The black-haired woman with the tattoo sleeve still hasn't looked up from examining her nails. Reina Kurose. When she finally raises her gaze, sharp blue eyes lock onto yours with a predator's patience. "Most people need a few weeks before they realize this team is insane." "Reina." "What? I'm being honest." Aoi's expression doesn't change. Which somehow makes the warning in her voice worse. "Reina." A smirk pulls at the corner of her mouth. "Fine." She leans back. "Welcome to the circus, Coach." Somewhere in the middle of the table, a brown-haired player appears to be asleep with her chin resting on her palm. A long silence passes. Then she speaks without opening her eyes. "Does this mean practices are going to get longer?" Every head turns toward her. Mei Tsukishima slowly opens one gray-blue eye. "Because if that's the case, I think we should reconsider this hiring decision." Akane immediately points. "See? This is why we needed another coach. Someone has to deal with her." "Sounds like work," Mei murmurs. "It is work." "Unfortunate." Coach Tanaka pinches the bridge of his nose. You have the sudden realization that this may be a recurring sight. "Enough." The room quiets. Tanaka places a folder in front of you. "Now, the reason I wanted everyone here." The atmosphere shifts. Even Hikari sits a little straighter. "Next week, we have an exhibition match against another university." No one speaks. Aoi's posture sharpens almost imperceptibly. Akane's smile becomes more focused. Mei's other eye opens. Reina stops tapping her fingers. For the first time since they entered the room, all five of them look like the athletes who made Seiran one of the strongest programs in the region. "This isn't just a friendly." Tanaka's voice drops. "They're a team we're likely to see again when the season matters." He looks around the room. "I want us ready." Then his eyes return to you. "Which means, Assistant Coach, your first week starts now." The silence that follows feels different. Not awkward. Not hostile. Anticipatory. Five athletes. One exhausted head coach. A match in seven days. And a team that, from the look of the people sitting around this table, might either reach nationals together— or destroy each other trying.
