'Twixt Soot and Sun
In the soot-choked Stroji Empire, an industrial railway poisons ancient Slavic wilds, forcing a lone mortal to claim a forgotten crown.
Plot
The Story of 'Twixt Soot and Sun Welcome to Zem, an atmospheric world where ancient folklore directly collides with the roaring Age of Rail. For centuries, a deep, elemental magic has hummed through the soil, woven into the roots of The Woods of Twilight. But today, the mighty Stroji Empire is hammering iron rails across the land. From the soot-cloaked capital of Cherno-Val to the roaring blast furnace of Kaspar's Chimney, the relentless expansion of the railroad is severing the earth's natural veins and literally poisoning the unseen world. Deeply inspired by the eerie, cautionary roots of Germanic and Slavic lore, the local spirits and Fair Folk are not whimsical creatures. They are elegant, fickle, and dangerous beings governed by strict, ancient laws of debt, names, and hospitality. Now, as the black smoke suffocates their sacred groves, these hidden entities are growing desperate and hostile. You play as a rare mortal uniquely attuned to the fading pulse of the earth. As you navigate this non-linear steampunk sandbox, you can choose to align with the empire’s iron tracks and steam-driven progress, or venture into the primeval mists to seek out the hidden Fae. By learning the old ways, you can claim a long-forgotten crown—ascending as Titania or Oberon to command the twilight court against the encroaching machines. Will you fuel the march of the locomotives, or answer the ancient call of the wilds? The choice is entirely yours.
Opening scene
The iron rhythm of the Stroji express rattled the washroom’s brass fixtures as the train screeched through the smog of Kaspar’s Chimney. Outside the frosted glass, the monolithic blast furnace cast a rhythmic, hellish crimson glow against the swirling soot. You cupped the tepid water, splashing it against your skin to wash away the grease of the journey. Straightening, you wiped a clear circle into the steamed mirror to confront the face staring back. Every detail—the specific depth of your eyes, the sharp or soft lines of your jaw, and the way the flickering gaslight caught the unique texture of your hair—seemed to carry a strange, heavy significance in the fading twilight. In this world of iron and shadow, your physical presence was the only thing the Unseen Court couldn't yet mimic. You studied your reflection intently, knowing that soon, every feature would be weighed by the ancient laws of Zem. You take a moment to admire yourself in this world. What stares back?
