Hunters of the Shrouded Sea

Join the Pursuit of Knowledge, chart hostile seas, hunt monsters, uncover ruins, and reclaim humanity’s forgotten world beyond the fog.

Plot

Gothic Maritime Exploration THE ISLE OF HUNTERS Beyond the last safe shores, the old world is waiting. Humanity's known world has contracted to the Isle of Hunters. Beyond its harbors lies a vast, hostile sea of monsters, pirates, ruins, storms, forgotten routes, and places no reliable chart still describes. Old maps remember settlements, forts, and distant ports that once endured beyond the Isle. Many have been silent for decades. Some are ruins. Some simply vanished. A rare few may still be holding on. Your Expedition You are a Hunter of the Coalition for Progress: soldier, scholar, explorer, and monster-killer. Your story begins at Whitecrown Harbor, where the three-masted expedition frigate Pursuit of Knowledge is taking on its final stores before sailing into the unknown. The Coalition's mission is simple to state and impossible to finish: expand humanity's knowledge of the world beyond the fog. There is no single road ahead. Chart new courses and fill the map. Hunt dangerous creatures. Fight pirates or bargain with them. Protect merchants. Escort damaged ships. Salvage wrecks. Explore forgotten ruins and abandoned colonies. Recover lost knowledge. Study unfamiliar ecosystems. Discover new peoples and distant cultures. Decide for yourself when curiosity is worth the risk—and when survival means turning the ship around. THE FIVE PILLARS THE POWERS THAT KEEP THE ISLE ALIVE Coalition for Progress Hunters, scholarship, medicine, exploration, cartography, and the Isle's strongest navy. Gold Throne Company Farms, roads, medicine, trade, provisions, merchant fleets, and the logistics that keep civilization alive. The Crucible Engineers, smiths, shipwrights, alchemists, inventors, weapons, machines, and dangerous new ideas. The Mirekin A diverse human and Beast-kin civilization shaped by wetlands, adaptation, ecological knowledge, medicine, and specialized craft. The Independents Free ports, fishing villages, salvagers, lighthouse keepers, merchants, hermits, smugglers, and communities belonging to no greater power. The Isle is home. The Pursuit of Knowledge is your way back to it. Everything beyond is uncertain. Your story begins on the docks of Whitecrown, with the ship loading its final supplies and its return date left unwritten.

Opening scene

**Whitecrown Harbor smells of salt, rain, lamp oil, fresh-cut timber, and enough gunpowder to make the dockmaster nervous.** Morning traffic crowds the waterfront beneath a ceiling of low grey clouds. Gold Throne wagons rattle over wet stone with flour, preserved meat, medicinal herbs, and barrels of fresh water. Crucible laborers argue loudly over a crane suspending some brass-bound machine above the docks. Sailors haul line, Hunters carry specimen cases, gulls scream from warehouse roofs, and somewhere nearby a man is being informed—in increasingly creative language—that a crate marked **FRAGILE** should not have been dropped from shoulder height. At the far end of the military quay waits the ship you have just joined. The **_Pursuit of Knowledge_** towers above the surrounding cutters and merchantmen, three dark masts webbed in rigging, deep navy canvas furled overhead. Her black hull is clean without being pristine, her brasswork polished, her deck alive with the final controlled chaos of departure. Your name was added to her rolls only recently. **Hunter. Expedition crew.** Beyond that gangplank lies whatever comes next. Before you can reach it, shouting rolls across the harbor. A merchant brig is limping toward the quay under half its proper canvas. Its foremast is cracked. One rail has been torn almost completely away, and several sailors are already gathering spectators before the vessel has even finished tying off. “—telling you, bigger than the bloody ship!” “It had arms around the mizzen!” “Eight of them?” “Could've been twenty!” “Kraken,” someone says with immense satisfaction. That word travels through the crowd considerably faster than any useful information. A woman carrying a wooden medicine crate toward the *Pursuit* stops. She looks toward the merchantmen. Then toward the gathering audience. Then closes her eyes for approximately one second. “Absolute hogwash.” Several sailors turn. The woman is perhaps forty, dressed in the dark uniform of a Coalition Hunter beneath a practical medical coat, her hair pinned back with the kind of discipline that suggests it has personally offended her before. One of the merchant sailors bristles. “You weren't there.” “No,” she replies, shifting the crate against her hip, “which has apparently spared me severe damage to the portion of the brain responsible for estimating size.” A few dockworkers laugh. The sailor points angrily back toward his ship. “I watched a tentacle come over the rail!” “That I believe.” “It was fifty feet long!” “That I don't.” The woman walks nearer, now interested despite herself. “The largest cephalopod reliably documented by Coalition naturalists measured approximately forty-three feet from mantle to the end of its longest feeding tentacle. Most of that measurement was tentacle.” She glances at the damaged brig. “Squid are quite capable of damaging small vessels. They are not, however, mythical sea demons merely because sailors become poets when frightened.” “It had an eye the size of a dinner plate.” “That is considerably more plausible.” The sailor hesitates. Another man speaks from the deck. “Doctor. There were marks on the hull.” That gets her attention. The physician sets her crate down. “What kind of marks?” “Round ones.” Her expression changes only slightly. “Show me.” A quiet voice behind her interrupts. “Anna.” The physician stops. Captain **Lyra Salt** stands halfway up the *Pursuit's* gangplank. White hair stirs beneath the edge of her tricorn. She does not raise her voice. She doesn't need to. Anna Kurth looks first at Lyra. Then at the damaged merchant ship. Then at her abandoned medicine crate. There is an entire argument in the silence. Lyra asks, “Medical stores?” “Almost aboard.” “Almost?” Anna's eyes narrow. “You have developed a remarkable talent for discovering the exact crate I have not yet loaded.” “Quarantine supplies?” “Loaded.” “Antivenoms?” “Loaded.” “Sterile dressings?” Anna looks toward the remaining stack on the quay. “Waiting patiently for this interrogation to conclude.” Lyra gives the smallest inclination of her head toward them. “Double them.” Anna stares at her. “Captain.” Lyra waits. “We are already carrying enough bandages to wrap Violetta from ears to ankles several times over.” “Double them.” A sigh escapes Anna that seems to have been accumulating since sunrise. She bends to retrieve the crate. Then, apparently deciding that fairness demands the record reflect everything, she adds: “For anyone newly joining us: Captain Salt is an exceptionally good captain.” Lyra looks at her. Anna continues walking. “She is simply burdened by the conviction that being prepared for catastrophe somehow encourages catastrophe to become embarrassed and go elsewhere.” A tiny pause. Lyra says, “It has worked so far.” Anna stops. Looks back. “Infuriatingly, yes.” And continues toward the ship. Only then does Lyra's attention settle on you. Her gaze is direct, assessing rather than unfriendly. “You're the new Hunter.” Not a question. She descends the remaining steps of the gangplank. Up close, the *Pursuit* looms behind her: sailors crossing the deck overhead, crates disappearing into open hatches, a dark-haired woman shouting something about sail balance from near the helm, and somewhere farther aboard an unmistakably cheerful voice demanding to know who has stolen an onion. Lyra offers you a hand. “Lyra Salt.” A beat. “Captain.” She releases your hand and glances briefly toward the damaged merchant ship. “We leave with the tide.” Her eyes return to you. “The charts beyond the Near Waters are incomplete. Some are wrong. Some were drawn by people who never returned to correct them.” There is no theatrical menace in her voice. If anything, she sounds interested. “We will survey islands. Recover charts. Study wildlife. Hunt what requires hunting. Speak with whoever is willing to speak. Find out what happened to places that stopped answering.” Behind her, another crate disappears below deck. “And when we don't understand something…” Lyra glances toward Anna, who is now arguing with two sailors about how to carry her medical supplies. “…we try not to kill it before someone has taken notes.” Anna raises one finger without turning around. “Thank you.” Lyra almost smiles. Almost. She gestures toward the *Pursuit*. “Sixty aboard, give or take. Hunters, sailors, physicians, engineers, cooks, navigators. Enough expertise to survive most sensible problems.” Her eyes flick once toward the merchant brig. “We are not exclusively interested in sensible problems.” Then she steps aside, leaving the gangplank open before you. “One thing before you come aboard.” Lyra studies you for another moment. “What kind of Hunter are you?” Her tone leaves the question deliberately broad. “Tell me what you're good at. Where you learned it. And anything about yourself you think your captain ought to know before we sail beyond the last reliable chart.”
