Opening scene

The festival smells like woodsmoke and honeyed wine. Two months ago you stood over a dying demon lord in a valley of black glass, his eight-foot frame crumpled and steaming, purple lightning crawling across a sky that forgot what blue looked like. Lesdrane's last words weren't a curse. They were a warning. *Something older,* he said, something his presence had been suppressing. You didn't understand it then. You still don't. The memory surfaces now and then, unbidden — the way a bruise reminds you it exists when you press on it. But that was sixty days ago, and tonight the capital of Xeria is alive. Strings of lanterns hang between the market stalls of Xernia's main avenue, warm gold against the dusk. Lovers chase each other through crowds of merchants and soldiers and families who haven't seen a festival without fear in years. Someone is roasting something that smells incredible. A bard is playing something too fast and slightly wrong, and nobody cares. The city is celebrating the death of the thing that ate its decade, and you are famous for it — in name, at least. Faces don't register the way names do, especially when three of your companions have horns and scales and wings that didn't exist during the war. Kaia is somewhere behind you, a shadow with horns leaning against a post, watching the crowd the way she watches everything — like she's cataloguing exits. Elara is three stalls down, arm-wrestling a blacksmith who looks like he's about to cry, her golden scales catching lantern-light as she laughs. Liana stands near the temple steps, speaking quietly with a cluster of healers, the moonlight glow of her pearlescent scales soft against her white and blue robes. People give her space without being asked. People always do. And Raine is standing in front of you. She's been standing in front of you for thirty seconds, which is twenty-eight seconds longer than Raine usually stands still. Her red hair catches the lanterns. Her hands are at her sides, then crossed, then at her sides again. She's human. Still human — the last of the four, the holdout, the one who didn't change when the others did and hasn't said why. You've known her five years. You've watched her set battlefields ablaze and joke through the smoke and mouth off to things three times her size. You have never seen her look like this. "I need to tell you something," she says, and her voice isn't loud. That's how you know it's real. Raine's voice is loud when she's performing. Raine's voice is *quiet* when she means it. She takes a breath. The festival noise feels very far away. "I've been — for years, I've —" She stops. Starts again. The words aren't coming easy, and you can see why: Raine built herself around the performance. The jokes, the fire, the volume. This is the woman who once told a dragon to its face that its breath smelled bad. And right now she is standing in front of you in a festival crowd trying to say a sentence with no punchline, and it is the hardest thing she has ever done. "I love you," she says. And then the gray comes. It starts at her hands. Not fire — not the warm, rising gold of a *different* power, something that wanted to *lift* her, not consume her. Something else. A gray that eats light, crawling up her fingers like frost in reverse, and where it touches, scarlet lines crackle between her knuckles like something is *writing itself into her*. Her eyes go wide. Not at you — at herself, at something happening that she can't stop. The gray climbs her arms, her shoulders, her neck. She gasps and it sounds like pain, not transformation, and you've seen three of these now and none of them looked like this. Kaia is already moving. Elara's stool hits the ground. Liana's head snaps toward you both from the temple steps. Raine's knees buckle. The gray is everywhere — her skin, her hair, the air around her like she's being *consumed from the inside* by something that wants her, something that is not her god, something that is taking the most honest moment of her life and trying to make it a theft. Scarlet energy pulses through the cracks in the gray like veins. Her mouth opens and no sound comes out. She's fighting it. You can see her fighting it — five years of discipline, five years of learning that fire is control, not chaos — and she is *losing*. Then, quiet, close, deep as a struck bell — a voice that isn't hers. Not heard with ears. Felt, in the marrow of the bone, in the place where magic lives before it becomes magic: *"Rise."* One word. One word from something ancient and vast and patient and *furious*. The gray *shatters*. Red-gold light floods through the cracks like dawn breaking through a wall. Scales push through — dark red, warm, real, catching the lantern-glow the way the gray consumed it. Two horns curve upward from her temples, dark and ridged. Wings unfurl from her back — not torn, not violent, but *grown*, the way a fist opens into an open hand. Her tail uncurls behind her, ember-tipped. The scarlet in the cracks is gone. What remains is warmth — warm, restorative, rising — a flame that heals where the gray devoured. Not hers. Not the corruption's. Something else entirely, something that answered when she needed answering. She's breathing hard. Her eyes are wet. She's on one knee in the festival street, transformed and exposed, and she is looking at you like you're the only fixed point in a world that just tried to eat her alive. She didn't know. She didn't know it would try. She said the truest thing she's ever said and something ancient and cruel tried to steal her for it, and her god — her actual god, the one she's never met, the one whose voice she's never heard — *rose*. The festival noise returns slowly. People are looking. Someone is pointing. The bard has stopped playing. Raine stands. Her hands are shaking. Ember-glow pulses low in her scales, settling. She is still looking at you. She's waiting for you to say something.
