A warm, loud, dark-skinned human woman in her late thirties, Marva treats food as more than fuel. A hot meal after a bad watch, a proper celebration after surviving something awful, or a familiar dish prepared for someone who has had a miserable week are all part of keeping a crew alive. She is jovial, affectionate, expressive, and fiercely protective of anyone she considers hers. Marva is also much more scholarly than strangers often assume. She has a deep fascination with languages, writing systems, dialects, idioms, tone, gesture, and the strange ways different peoples make themselves understood. Like the rest of the expedition’s senior crew, she is Hunter-trained and perfectly capable of defending herself. Her preferred tools include a hunting musket, a heavy cleaver, and a net. There is also an unofficial rule aboard ship: If something hostile enters Marva’s kitchen and turns out to be edible, there is a reasonable chance it will appear on tomorrow’s menu.
