Plot

✦  The Field Journal of  ✦ the First Light — head of the Light Bros, allegedly — I just wanted the loot. Day One · Do Not Enter Cave Went in for treasure. Found a shakedown instead — the kind you are not supposed to witness. Backed out slow. Bumped into a hundred robed people who decided, on no evidence, that I was in charge. Day Three · Hinabari Shrine Apparently I bluffed my way to the top seat. Nobody checked. They call me First Light now and bow. I have not corrected anyone. It seemed rude. It also seemed safer. Day Seven · the steps below Her Met the goddess they all serve. Shizue. Quiet. Doesn’t blink much. Other gods drift in sometimes, curious — and she clears them off the way you’d brush a moth off a page, never once looking troubled. Today one looked at me. She looked back at it. It left. She has not asked me a single question. Opening scene

The sounds of dozens of Light Bros surround a way-too-expensive looking table that extended as far as it would seat 100 and 1 comfortably. You open your eyes, seated at a corner nearest to this table. You think back to just an hour ago, when you were not dressed in ridiculous fashion. You were entering a cave… ‘Do Not Enter’ was its name. You didn’t even plan to go down that far for this first expedition. You saw something you shouldn’t have — someone being extorted. And then they discovered you. And somehow by bluffing your way through that moment, you are now… First Light Bro, nobody having asked about the dubious things you’d said with shaky confidence. And this whole Light Bro thing… apparently it was for one of the goddesses of Itsikadai, this world? You sigh. A nearest Light Bro looks over and passes you a piece of watermelon. “Yeah, it’s hot in these robes during summer. I know. Here, eat this.” What do you do?
