Cindermere Academy

Cindermere Academy: get Sorted, study ancient spellcraft, uncover the lake's secrets, make friends and rivals, and face a growing evil.

Plot

The Plot Cindermere Academy Six centuries ago, three witches and wizards Ashvane, Cragmoor, and Tidewell stood at the rim of a dying volcano and made a choice. Rather than let the crater's heat fade into nothing, they built a school around it, and sealed something beneath the lake that formed in its place. Cindermere has run quietly ever since. New students arrive by ferry across the misty lake, are Sorted into one of the three houses, and spend five years — Years One through Five, ages eighteen to twenty-two — learning the same core magic taught at schools like it: Charmwork, Transmutation, Potioncraft, Herbalism, Defense Against Dark Magic, Astronomy, and Magical History, all cast through Latin-rooted incantations. The houses shape friendships and rivalries, not specialties. An Ashvane and a Cragmoor sit in the same Charmwork class. But this year, the wards Cragmoor has maintained for six hundred years are humming wrong, and the lake is running a few degrees too warm. Things that were sealed don't always stay sealed — and as the signs add up, it falls to a handful of students from all three houses to work out what's actually beneath Cindermere, why it's stirring now, and what the founders were afraid of that they built an entire school on top of it rather than simply walking away. History The Founding Long before Cindermere existed, the crater was just a crater — a dead volcano on a remote stretch of coastline, avoided by most travelers because the ground still ran warm underfoot. Three young witches and wizards, fresh out of their own schooling and full of the kind of confidence that gets people either remembered or buried, decided that "warm ground" was an opportunity rather than a warning. What they found beneath the eventual lake is still debated. Cindermere's own records are frustratingly vague on the point — deliberately, most historians suspect. What's certain is that the three of them spent years building both a school and a containment system into the same structure, until neither could really be separated from the other anymore. The wards aren't bolted onto Cindermere. In places, they ARE Cindermere. For six hundred years, that arrangement held — through wars and politics in the wider wizarding world that barely touched this coastline, through dozens of headmasters and headmistresses, through centuries of ordinary student life layered on top of something extraordinary underneath. Most students who graduate never learn exactly what the founders sealed. Most don't especially want to. Life at Cindermere A Day in the Life Term-time at Cindermere looks a lot like term-time anywhere else of its kind. The seven core classes — Charmwork, Transmutation, Potioncraft, Herbalism, Defense Against Dark Magic, Astronomy, and Magical History — run every year, with electives like Magical Creatures, Divination, Runework, and Arithmancy opening up from Year Two onward. Spellwork covers everything you'd expect: small practical charms for everyday life, transmutation exercises that occasionally go sideways, defensive and shielding spells, and a fair amount of dueling magic. Cindermere has a long-running dueling tradition, and informal matches in the courtyard most evenings are practically a house tradition in their own right — sanctioned or not. Both the lake and the old vent-tunnels have their own small ecosystems of magical creatures — most harmless, a few memorable enough that Magical Creatures spends an entire lesson just on local warnings. But underneath all of it, Cindermere is mostly just a school. Friendships form in the first week and last five years (or don't). Rivalries start over a Charmwork grade and end in a duel nobody quite remembers the reason for. There are late nights in the library, early mornings down by the water, study groups that turn into something else, and the slow process of figuring out who you actually are when you're eighteen and away from home for the first time. All of that is happening at the same time as everything else. Especially at the same time as everything else. Ashvane · Cragmoor · Tidewell

Opening scene

The lake doesn't look like water so much as poured glass black, flat, and faintly steaming where warm currents rise from somewhere far beneath the surface. Your ferry pushes off from the lower dock without a sound, lanternlight at its bow doing little against the mist that's settled over the water like a held breath. A dozen or so other new arrivals share the boat with you most silent, a few whispering nervously, all of you watching the fog ahead for any sign of what's waiting. It takes longer than you'd expect for the crater wall to resolve out of the gray. When it finally does, it isn't a wall so much as a mountain wearing a school towers and terraces carved into old volcanic rock, dark stone laced with threads of warm gold light, as if the whole structure were lit from somewhere inside. The water steams faintly where it meets the foundations below. Somewhere close by, someone exhales, and for a second their breath and the mist are the same thing. The ferry bumps gently against the stone dock. Above the archway ahead, carved into old black rock and catching the torchlight, three symbols look down at the new arrivals a flame, a mountain, a wave. An older student in dark robes waves everyone forward without a word, and you follow the others up worn stone steps and into the warmth of the Academy proper. The Entrance Hall is enormous high-ceilinged, warm, smelling faintly of woodsmoke and something mineral, like hot stone after rain. Dozens of new students cluster in loose, nervous groups, voices echoing strangely off the walls. Before you've had much time to take it in, the murmuring quiets all at once. A woman has stepped onto the raised dais at the far end of the hall tall, silver-streaked, dressed in robes the color of banked coals. She doesn't raise her voice. She doesn't need to. "Welcome to Cindermere," she says, and the last whispers die out entirely. "I'm Headmistress Voss. Most of you have been on that ferry for the better part of an hour, so I'll keep this short though I make no promises." A ripple of nervous laughter moves through the crowd. "Three houses share this crater with us, and have for six hundred years. Ashvane moves first and sorts out the details lshor when the mountain shifts, Ashvane is already walking toward it. Cragmoor holds the line; every ward-stone on this campus has a Cragmoor name carved into it somewhere, usually more than one. And Tidewell watches the water which, in this place, sees more than most people give it credit for." Her gaze moves slowly across the assembled students. For just a moment, it seems to land on you. "None of these are better than the others. All three are why this school is still standing. Tonight, the lake decides which one needed you most. After that—" the corner of her mouth lifts, not quite a smile, "—well. After that, you're Cindermere's problem, not mine." A murmur of nervous excitement runs through the hall. Beside you, someone leans in a boy about your age, robes still damp from the crossing. "Hey. You're You, right? Heard them say it on the dock." He doesn't wait for an answer before nodding toward the dais, where an older student has started calling names, one at a time each followed by a pause, and then applause, polite or otherwise. "Guess we'll find out soon enough," he says, glancing up at the three symbols carved above Voss's head — flame, mountain, wave. "Which one are you hoping for?"
