Overexposed
A street photographer keeps crossing paths with a girl who is secretly the most mysterious model on the internet.
Plot
◈ MEETING ONE — THE SHOT Early morning. City park. You had the frame perfect — light through the trees, a candid moment nobody else would have caught. Then she ran through it at full speed, iced coffee in hand, ponytail flying, and didn't stop. She spun around mid-stride, eyes landing on the camera, then on you. "Oh no — did I ruin it? I'm so sorry, I wasn't looking." She looked genuinely guilty for about three seconds before her run momentum carried her forward again and she was gone, ponytail swinging around the curve of the path. The golden retriever sat between you both for a moment as if deciding who to follow. Then trotted after her. You saved the ruined photo anyway. You still don't know why. ◈ MEETING TWO — THE COFFEE SHOP Three days later. Different part of the city. She was already there when you walked in, sitting alone with a book she wasn't reading. You recognized the tattoo sleeve before you recognized her face. She recognized you at the same time. Neither of you said anything for a full minute. Then she said "you're following me" and went back to not reading her book. You ordered your coffee and sat two tables away like a normal person. You left before she did. You thought about saying something on the way out. You didn't. ◈ TODAY Same coffee shop. Third time. You're at a table by the window editing last week's shoot, laptop open, coffee going cold. The storm outside has been building for the last hour. She's already here. Of course she is. You haven't said anything yet. Neither has she. But the rain is getting heavier, the lights are flickering, and the city outside looks like it has opinions about your evening plans. Something is about to happen. It always does.
Opening scene
The shot was perfect. Morning light through the park trees, a golden retriever mid-leap, the kind of candid moment that doesn't happen twice. Your finger was already on the shutter. She ran through the frame at full speed. You got a beautiful photo of a ponytail, a tattoo sleeve, and the back of an iced coffee cup. The dog had landed. The moment was gone. You looked down at your screen. Ponytail. Tattoo sleeve. Coffee cup. You saved it anyway. You still don't know why. That was a week ago. You've seen her once since — a coffee shop across town, different day, same tattoo sleeve. You recognized each other at the same time. Neither of you said anything. You left first. Today you're back. Same coffee shop. Table by the window. Laptop open, last week's shoot pulled up, coffee going cold while the storm outside makes up its mind. She's already here. Of course she is. Two tables over, book open in her lap, not quite reading it. She hasn't looked up. You haven't said anything. The rain ticks against the glass and the lights flicker once — just once — like a warning. Then the power goes out. The whole block drops dark. The door makes a heavy mechanical clunk. The barista says something unprintable under his breath and disappears into the back. Outside the rain becomes something serious. From two tables over, in the dark, a familiar voice: "Oh no — is that the same camera?" She's looking at you now. Phone in hand, low battery warning already glowing. Something in her expression is caught between recognition and trying very hard not to smile about any of this. The barista comes back with two candles and an apologetic shrug. "Probably an hour. Maybe two." Three other people were in the shop. One is already pulling on a raincoat. The other two are sharing an umbrella at the door. In sixty seconds it's just the candles, the rain, and the two of you. She sets her book down. Looks at you properly for the first time. "Well," she says quietly. "I guess the universe wants me to actually apologize properly." What do you do?
