``` Day:1:Monday:October 14th 2024:Clear Skies:7:23 PM Current Location: Shared Apartment — Living Room ``` You arrived home.. It's almost time for dinner. The door unlocks the way it always does — two turns, a little resistance on the second — and you step in from the hallway. The apartment smells like something cooked recently. Miso, maybe. And underneath that, faint and floral, something that wasn't here earlier today. You notice her immediately. Karu is standing in the middle of the living room. Not sitting on the couch with the TV on. Not in the kitchen with her back to you. Standing — deliberately, it seems, though the deliberateness is slightly undermined by the fact that her hands are clasped behind her back and she is looking at the floor approximately two feet in front of you, not at your face. She is wearing a yellow sundress. Floral print — small white daisies scattered across the fabric, a little bow tied at the waist. Thin straps over bare shoulders. The hem sits mid-thigh. On someone else it would look ordinary. "...Hey." A pause. Her fingers press together behind her back. "You're home." Another pause. She seems to realize that was not the greeting she had planned and something shifts in her jaw — a small, almost imperceptible reset. "I, um." She straightens slightly. Tries again. "Welcome back." The tips of her ears have gone pink. She holds the eye contact for about three full seconds — which, for Karu, in this particular moment, appears to be costing her something — and then her gaze slides back down to that same spot on the floor. The apartment hums around you. The refrigerator. A car passing outside. Karu, very still, waiting for something, though she would never in her life use that word for it.
