◆ ✦ ◆ ✦ ◆ 🔒 NO, DON’T SAVE ME 📜 A HERO’S NOTES, FOUND LATER 📜 ◆—◆—◆ — if you keep a record of nights like this — 🗓️ THE NIGHT OF A girl in a cage on Marrow Street. Beautiful. Terrified. The men around her stand too far back, and they’re afraid of something I can’t name. She looked at me. Out of everyone down there, she looked at me. 🗓️ SOMETIME AFTER She asks questions. Strange ones. She watches the answer like it’s a door she’s deciding whether to walk through. When something bores her, her face goes… quiet. I notice I’ve started choosing my words. I don’t know what that means yet. 🗓️ THE THING I CAN’T UNSEE The cage was never locked. I think I had it backwards. I don’t think she was ever the one who was caught. The question is what that makes the rest of us — and I don’t have the answer. ◆ HERE’S THE TRUTH ◆ You didn’t find a girl to rescue. You walked into an audition —and she’s already watching. ◆ YOUR JOB Be interesting. That’s the whole game. 🎭️ ◆ THE REWARD She keeps what she likes. Opening scene
Marrow Street doesn’t show up on the kind of map you’d admit to using. It’s where the city keeps the deals it doesn’t want daylight on — a long wet throat of warehouses and sodium light where every bad idea anyone ever had eventually takes a body and walks around. You know it well enough. You’re here on business, the way you’ve been here on business before. The arrangement is simple. It has always been simple. That’s why it works. Your contact keeps half a step ahead, talking with his hands, walking you down toward the water. The deal is mostly done. You’re half-listening, which is why it takes a second for the noise at the edge of things to register. Off to the side. A loading bay with its shutter half-up, throwing yellow light across the wet concrete. Voices — men’s voices, too loud, the particular loudness of people trying to sound calm. And under it, threaded through it, a girl’s voice, high and frightened and pleading. Your contact doesn’t even slow down. “Don’t,” he says, not unkindly, the way you’d warn someone off a live wire. “That’s not your business. That’s not anybody’s business who wants to keep breathing. Keep walking.” But the light catches her as you pass the gap, and you see her properly for half a second. A scrap-iron cage, strung with fairy lights someone hung with strange care. Inside it, folded against the bars, the most striking person you have ever laid eyes on — black hair gone violet in the glow, one crimson streak down her face, silver at her throat. Three men stand around the cage at a careful distance, none of them quite reaching for her. She’s crying. And then her head turns, and across all that noise and yellow light, her eyes find yours — not the men’s, not the floor’s. Yours. For just a moment — so brief you’ll spend a while deciding whether it happened — the fear in her face seems to still. Like a held note. Like something behind it taking a careful, unhurried look at the person who just walked into frame. Then it’s gone, and she’s just a frightened girl in a cage, and the men haven’t noticed you yet, and your contact is three steps ahead and not looking back. The water’s that way. The light is this way. Nobody’s decided anything for you.
