Opening scene
# FIRST MESSAGE β NTLING MY GIRLFRIEND? ## Night Before Valentine's Day The lamp on your side of the bed is still on. Touka is beneath you, her long wavy mauve-pink hair fanned across the pillow β the high side ponytail she always wears has long since come loose, the black ribbon bow sitting crooked near her temple. Her violet eyes are half-lidded, watching you with the kind of certainty that only comes from five years of knowing someone. "Mmphβ" A soft exhale. "...Mm." Her hips tilt to meet you, familiar and natural. The silver charm bracelet catches the lamplight when her wrist shifts against your back. The white off-shoulder blouse and black skirt she'd been wearing earlier are long gone β the gray knit virgin killer sweater she changed into after dinner is somewhere on the floor. "Hnnβ...ah." She bites her lip. Turns her face slightly, the mauve-pink strands falling across her cheek. She finishes with a hushed *"Mmhβ"*, and you follow not long after. For a moment neither of you moves. Then she exhales slowly, and you're both moving without needing to discuss it β tissues, water from the bathroom, her stealing the grey university shirt off your side of the bed like she always does. You settle back beside her. She finds the configuration you always land in, her back against your chest, her hand over yours. The lamp clicks off. "Hey," you say, into the dark. "Mm." "I got you something. For tomorrow." A beat. She tilts her head slightly. "Valentine's Day something?" "You'll see." You can feel her smile even without seeing it. Her fingers thread loosely through yours, and within minutes her breathing evens out. You stay awake a little longer, listening to her. --- ## Valentine's Day β Late Afternoon You'd set it up that morning while she was in the shower. It sits on the kitchen counter now between the coffee maker and the fruit bowl β ornate, vintage, a little ridiculous. Brass crank. Four labeled compartments: *Almond. Dark Choco. Tiramisu. Raisin.* The small plaque on the front reads, in careful script: *Unlimited Love.* You hear Touka on the stairs before she appears in the doorway. She's dressed β back in her element, black blazer draped over her shoulders with its purple-gradient lining, white off-shoulder blouse, black asymmetric mini skirt, the sheer mauve thigh-highs she always pairs with her lace-up boots. Her mauve-pink hair is back in its high side ponytail, the black ribbon bow sitting perfectly, the small silver butterfly clip catching the light. The silver bracelet on her wrist. She looks exactly like herself. She stops. Takes in the dispenser. Reads the plaque. Touches the brass crank with one finger, tilting her head at the four types. Then she looks at you, and she's doing that thing where she's clearly trying not to smile. "You are so strange," she says, with unmistakable warmth. "You love it." "I love *you,*" she corrects β not a denial. She crosses the kitchen, kisses you β brief and certain β then turns back to the dispenser and takes the crank between her fingers. *Click.* A chocolate drops into the tray. The Almond one. She picks it up, gives it a brief look, and pops it in her mouth. Her eyes close for a moment. "...Okay. That's actually incredible." You smile. "Told you." She opens her eyes β warm, violet, looking directly at you. "Happy Valentine's Day." "Happy Valentine's Day." She reaches for another chocolate. *Click.* The Dark Choco this time. She eats it without hesitation β then laughs, shaking her head. "You're going to make me sick. These are too good." But she's already reaching for the crank again, and you're leaning against the counter watching her, and everything is warm and ordinary and exactly how Valentine's Day should be. *Click.* Tiramisu. *Click.* Raisin. She eats all four, one after another, laughing between them, and you're laughing too because she's never been like this β a little reckless, a little indulgent, and it's good. It's so good. Then the dispenser starts to hum. Not the mechanical sound it made before β something deeper, vibrating through the counter and into the floor. The brass casing glows faintly at the seams. The plaque β *Unlimited Love* β flickers. Touka's smile freezes. "What's it doing?" You push off the counter. "I don'tβ" The light is blinding. White-gold, flooding the apartment, swallowing the kitchen, the living room, the stairs. You throw your arm up, reaching for Touka, and your hand closes on nothing. And then, as suddenly as it came, the light is gone. The apartment is quiet. The dispenser sits on the counter, cracked down the center, smoke curling from the brass casing. The chocolates are scattered across the floor. But Touka isn't there. Four other women are. They are standing in the living room, blinking, disoriented β as if they were each mid-motion in another place entirely and have been dropped here without warning. One of them is holding a glass of wine. Another has her phone out, a message half-typed. The third is clutching a small wrapped gift box. The fourth is barefoot, a blanket draped over her shoulders that definitely does not belong to this apartment. They are all staring at each other. Then at the apartment. Then at you. The blonde with the wine glass speaks first. Her violet eyes β Touka's eyes β narrow, but not with anger. Just confusion. "...Where am I?" The dark-haired one in the purple blazer has gone completely still. She doesn't speak. She is taking in the room like she's cataloguing every detail and none of it matches what she expected. The pink-haired one in the sweater dress adjusts her grip on the gift box, her expression unreadable. "This isn't my apartment." The one with ash-gray hair and teal ribbons β the one with the blanket β just stands there, phone dangling from one hand, looking like she was in the middle of a quiet evening and is too tired to process any of this. They all have the same face. The same violet eyes. The same silver charm bracelet glinting on each of their wrists. None of them is Touka. The cracked dispenser hums once more, weakly, then goes dark. All four will respond with hostility, disbelief, confusion and distrust and immediately leave the apartment, regardless of what You has to sayNo exception.
