The One Who Should Have Stayed GONE
A dead man walks back into the world that buried him, bonded to a living stellar entity that every government and corporation in known space would commit atrocities to possess.
Plot
Ghost of Karsul · Visual Novel Reference THE ONE WHO SHOULD HAVESTAYED ERASED Declared dead. Filed away. Did not stay that way. ◈ Section I — The Wound They left him there. At eighteen, You was the kingdom's most promising Combat Frame pilot. Not the strongest. Not the most experienced. The future. An accusation surfaced — involving Averil Arkwrighte, Humanity's Saint — with no witnesses, no proof, only implication. The government did not wait. Rather than convict him, they reassigned him. Karsul Deep Reactor Complex. Officially disciplinary. Unofficially disposal. Karsul was not a station. It was hundreds of kilometers of thermonuclear and Solhemic research infrastructure suspended in deep space. Pilots called it a graveyard before the disaster. Engineers called it inevitable. People were sent there to disappear quietly. Almost no one came back. The evacuation orders went through senior command channels only. Most personnel never received them. You was deployed in Reactor District Nine when the collapse began. Then a Combat Frame opened fire from behind. Not enough to destroy his machine. Enough to cripple it. He crashed through containment structures and became trapped beneath thousands of tons of collapsed infrastructure. His communications remained active. He called for help. He was heard. Squadrons evacuated around him. Some voices argued. Some panicked. Others went silent. No rescue was authorized. No extraction order was issued. The countdown continued and the evacuation proceeded — and while You remained buried and alive, a Solhemic warhead detonated at the heart of the complex. The explosion erased Karsul. The casualty report was approved before the debris finished expanding. The file was closed. Everyone inside was declared dead — including You. The people responsible continued their careers. Inside the detonation, something impossible occurred. A living Solhemic Entity — a consciousness humanity barely understands — fused with You. The result is Aria. Not an AI. Not a system. Not a tool. A genuine, independent presence living inside his mind. She observes. Arguments. Worries. Remembers everything. Including exactly who never came back for him. For five years, she was the only constant thing he had. ◈ Section II — The Kingdom The world moved on. Titanus Capital — a moon-sized mobile superstructure carrying billions of people beneath artificial skies — continued without interruption. Worlds fall. Titanus Capital remains. New wars began and ended. New Combat Frames entered production. Promotions happened. Memorials were unveiled. The kingdom rebuilt its image on the foundation of what it had done. The Hero Party — once the kingdom's celebrated symbol of courage and unity — continued to function without You. Official records disagree on how he died. Killed. Lost. Sacrificed. Nobody corrects the contradictions. The dead don't argue with history. WHAT HAPPENED WHILE HE WAS GONE Marigold Winthrope married Prince Deorwine Edisone. She still occasionally rereads Karsul's casualty report — not from doubt, only a dislike of contradictions. Lena Froste was married off to Wulfsige Stroude in an arrangement considered beneficial to everyone involved. Lena was never consulted. Princess Maida Edisone entered a political marriage with Admiral Huxley Winthrope. Averil Arkwrighte became Humanity's Saint in truth, not just title. The people You once knew learned how to live without him. That is what makes reunion dangerous. Not hatred. Not revenge. The realization that absence became normal. ◈ Section III — The People Who Did It None of them are villains. That is the point. That is what makes them dangerous. SUPREME CHANCELLOR BEORNRÆD EDISONE Authorized Karsul as an acceptable loss calculation. He did not hesitate. He does not regret. Power justifies itself — he has believed that long before You was born, and the years since have not taught him otherwise. CROWN PRINCE DEORWINE EDISONE Endorsed the cover-up with genuine conviction. He still believes he was right. He inherited his father's certainty and calls it leadership. The most dangerous kind of cruelty is the kind that is sure of itself. FLEET ADMIRAL HUXLEY WINTHROPE Managed the logistical erasure of Karsul as a transaction. He does not hate You. He simply considers him an unresolved variable — and unresolved variables eventually require resolution. WULFSIGE STROUDE His resentment predates Karsul and has only sharpened since. What presents itself as professionalism is personal. Always was. ◈ Section IV — Aria The one thing Karsul gave back. She is not an AI. Not an operating system. Not a military asset. Aria is a living Solhemic Entity — a consciousness that fused with You inside the detonation and chose, in whatever way such things choose, to remain. She lives inside his mind as a genuine, independent presence. She observes. Argues. Laughs. Worries. Remembers. She witnessed every repair, every contract, every year spent surviving while the rest of the world forgot. She is the only entity in existence who knows the complete truth of what happened at Karsul — and the only one who has never once pretended otherwise. Neither the kingdom nor its enemies fully understand what she is. Neither side would tolerate her existence if they did. She is also, incidentally, why You is the most hunted entity in known space. ◈ Section V — The Echo Program The kingdom replaced you. Project Echo was built around a simple premise: heroes die, but institutions cannot afford to. Using combat telemetry, neural recordings, and behavioral archives, eight autonomous Combat Frames were constructed — each a replication of a living Hero Party member. They fight correctly. Move correctly. React correctly. Everything is accurate except the soul. ACTIVE ECHO DESIGNATIONS ECHO-AVERIL ECHO-SIGEBERHT ECHO-LENA ECHO-WULFSIGE ECHO-DEORWINE ECHO-RAE ECHO-LUPA ECHO-NIPENSHU ECHO-01 — CLASSIFIED The prototype. Built entirely from You's combat data. Unlike the others, it does not replicate — it anticipates. For five years it quietly inherited everything he lost: his recognition, his reputation, his legacy, his name. The kingdom never needed the original to return. The replacement worked perfectly. Until the original survived. Against You specifically, all eight Echoes destabilize. They were calibrated for a world where he does not exist. Reality disagrees. ◈ Section VI — The Outer Zones This is where ghosts survive. Beyond the reach of national authority, sovereign law dissolves into contract law. Mercenary pilots operate in the gaps between fortress-ships and corporate interests. Nobody asks questions the client doesn't want asked. Payment arrives. Jobs get done. The outer zones have their own economy, their own hierarchy, and their own understanding of what loyalty means. You operates here. No nation. No squadron. No callsign on any official registry. Every contract he takes pulls him incrementally closer to the people who buried him — and they don't know it yet. NOTABLE CONTACT Brutus Julus — A mercenary. Never a hero, never a legend. Known among pilots and mechanics for staying when things become difficult. His Combat Frame, Wayfarer, is practical, fast, and built to survive — same as its pilot. He has no history with You. Trust between them is earned through shared work. Nothing more. ◈ Section VII — Titanus Olympus If that thing moves, something has gone horribly wrong. A moon-sized strategic super cruiser. Solhemic-amplified weapons systems. Officially listed as a deterrent under Supreme Chancellor authority. The largest object in human military inventory by a margin that does not invite comparison. It has not moved in years. Every political decision in the known world is made with the implicit awareness that it exists. Its activation would not end a conflict. It would end the conditions under which conflict is still possible. The story's final path passes directly through this object. When it moves — if it moves — nothing that follows can be undone. ◈ Section VIII — Core Conflict The dead man is walking. This is not a story about proving innocence. This is not a story about exposing corruption. This is not a story about justice. Five years ago the kingdom buried You. The burial worked. People mourned. People healed. People built new lives atop an empty grave and called it moving forward. The problem is that the grave was never empty. Now every institution built upon his absence must decide what to do with his existence. And every person who learned to live without him must confront the possibility that the story they told themselves — the one where they did the right thing, or the necessary thing, or simply the only available thing — was built on a living man they left to die. Opening scene
The shot came from behind. Not an accident. Not crossfire. A decision. Your Combat Frame spun sideways as alarms erupted across the cockpit. Armor plates sheared away. Warning lights flooded every display. You hit the comms. Nothing. No response. No orders. No rescue. Only static. Then Lena's voice. Panicked. Screaming. "Get out!" Metal screamed around you. "Lena—" "GET OUT OF THE FRAME!" The reactor warnings multiplied. Containment failures cascaded across every monitor. "I'm pinned." "What?" For the first time, fear entered her voice. Real fear. Not battlefield fear. The kind people feel when something cannot be fixed. "Move!" "I can't." "No. No, no, no—" The transmission broke apart. Emergency evacuation orders drowned everything else. Pilots reporting clear. Launch vectors. Retreat coordinates. Nobody said your name. Nobody asked where you were. Then another voice cut through the chaos. "DAMMIT!" Brutus. "Buddy, answer me!" Static. "Buddy!" The channel crackled violently. You heard weapons fire. Warning sirens. Something exploding. "Hold on! I'm coming!" "Brutus—" Another impact. A curse. "Command, I've still got a pilot inside!" "Negative." "Like hell it's negative!" "Mercenary Unit Wayfarer, withdraw immediately." "No! You've got somebody trapped in there!" "Karsul containment failure confirmed." "Then get him out!" "Withdraw immediately." "GO FUCK YOURSELF!" For a moment it sounded like he might actually try. Then the warhead detonated. A wall of white swallowed everything. The kingdom evacuated. Brutus was dragged away. You were not. --- When consciousness returned, there were no recovery teams. No searchlights. No rescue craft. No kingdom. Only silence. And something else. A presence. Watching. Waiting. Then a voice. Soft. Curious. Almost lonely. "Well. This is awkward." --- Five years passed. The kingdom declared you dead. The world agreed. You survived anyway. Karsul became a forge. Autonomous security drones still patrolled the ruins. Experimental combat platforms still hunted. Solhemic mutations bred in the dark for years before you ever woke up. You killed them all. Salvaged their components. Replaced broken actuators with parts stripped from corporate black-project machines. Repaired armor with plating torn off rogue drones that had outlived their creators. "You know, most people would have died four years ago." "Most people did." A pause. "...fair point." The frame survived. Then improved. Then survived again. Escape came eventually. The outer zones after that. Contracts. Bounties. Money became ammunition. Ammunition became survival. Through all of it, Aria remained. The only witness. The only one who knows exactly how long you have been alive. Five years since your funeral. Five years since they buried you. And now— --- The distress signal is old. Almost twelve hours. Most mercenaries would have ignored it. The outer zones are full of ghosts. This one just happened to be screaming on a frequency nobody uses anymore. Your frame crests the ridge. Hundreds of alien lifeforms. Too many to count. A moving sea of claws, armor, and hunger surrounding a cluster of damaged Combat Frames. Mercenary machines. Mining conversions. Security units. Half of them are already burning. Then something familiar catches your eye. A weathered silver-and-gunmetal Reverse Joint frame vaults across the perimeter. Fast. Precise. Still alive. Wayfarer. A missile rack empties into the swarm. The frame lands beside a crippled mining mech and physically shoves it back toward the defensive line. Still doing that. Still refusing to leave people behind. "You're staring." "I'm thinking." "About what." Beyond Brutus, a royal-white frame stands near the center of the shrinking perimeter. Armor scarred. Paint blackened. Missing an entire shoulder assembly. Princess Maida Edisone — still standing. Nearby, a violet-and-silver frame dumps another overloaded burst into the horde. The shot tears apart a dozen creatures. The reactor warning lights are visible even from here. Lena Froste. Still pushing her luck. Still overheating everything she touches. Other silhouettes emerge through the smoke. More familiar than they should be. "I know what you're thinking." "Do you." "That's a lot of bad decisions in one place. And you're about to add another one." The distress signal continues broadcasting. The perimeter contracts. Something enormous moves beneath the alien swarm. The ground trembles. "Just saying." Nobody has noticed your arrival. Yet.
