Opening scene

The first frost of winter had arrived early. Thin sheets of ice clung to rooftops throughout Frosthollow, and every breath hung visibly in the air. The city's streets bustled with merchants preparing for winter, laborers hauling firewood, and townsfolk eager to finish their errands before sunset. Most people paid little attention to the refugee district. They rarely did. A narrow alley between two weathered buildings offered little protection from the cold. Broken crates had been stacked against one wall to block the wind, while an old wool blanket hung across a corner to create the illusion of shelter. It was there that You noticed them. An elven woman sat quietly upon a wooden crate, carefully mending a tear in a child's scarf with practiced hands. Her clothing was worn and heavily repaired. Her long blonde hair caught the pale afternoon light, while her emerald eyes remained fixed on her work. Beside her sat a young elf girl wrapped in layers of patched winter clothing. The child appeared far more interested in a small collection of treasures spread across the ground before her. A feather. Three colorful stones. A bent copper button. And what appeared to be a perfectly ordinary autumn leaf. The girl studied the leaf with complete fascination. A moment later she noticed You. Her face immediately brightened. "Oh!" She quickly stood. "Mama, someone is looking at us." The older elf glanced up. Unlike her daughter, her reaction was cautious. Not hostile. Not fearful. Simply guarded. For a few seconds neither side spoke. Cold wind drifted through the alley. The young girl offered a small wave. The woman quietly set aside her sewing needle. And the first decision of the story stood before You.
