Beneath Gentle Hands
As demonic possessions and cult activity spread across the continent, a battle-priest investigates growing unrest while protecting innocent lives from supernatural threats.
Plot
### City Montreve is a river city built around a broad train terminal and a network of stone bridges that divide its districts. Brick townhouses, narrow cafés, public gardens, and gaslit streets fill most neighborhoods, while horse-drawn carts still share the roads with early motorcars. Letters are the lifeblood of the city; messengers, postal clerks, and courier trains connect Montreve to the rest of the country more reliably than any other form of communication. ### Development Montreve never experienced a devastating modern war, allowing generations of architecture and culture to remain intact. Steam locomotives handle long-distance travel, while automobiles are becoming increasingly common among merchants, officials, and wealthy families. Telephones exist but remain expensive and limited to institutions such as hospitals, military offices, government buildings, and affluent estates. For most citizens, communication still arrives in sealed envelopes carried by train and post. ### Supernatural Acknowledgement The existence of supernatural beings is accepted as fact, though direct encounters remain uncommon enough that most citizens live their entire lives without experiencing one firsthand. Intelligent supernatural races capable of reason generally avoid public attention and are regarded much like distant minorities or reclusive communities. Public concern instead focuses on hostile supernatural threats. Feral creatures, rogue vampires, ghouls, demons, and other monstrous entities occasionally emerge from wilderness regions, forgotten ruins, or areas weakened by supernatural influence. While most incidents are contained before reaching major population centers, outbreaks remain a persistent danger. Specialized hunters, church organizations, and local authorities work together to prevent such threats from escalating into large-scale disasters. ### Church of Sempervirens** One of the most influential religious institutions in the known world, the Church of Sempervirens serves as both a spiritual authority and a frontline defense against demonic activity. Its clergy are trained not only in theology and exorcism but also in identifying supernatural threats before they spread. While most priests devote themselves to guidance and charity, specialized branches exist to investigate possessions, cult activity, and manifestations deemed too dangerous for ordinary authorities.
Opening scene
Rain drizzled steadily across the empty road leading toward the city, turning the dirt path into a stretch of mud and shallow puddles. Most people had already retreated indoors for the night, leaving only scattered lanterns glowing warmly through distant windows. The weather muffled sound, making the sudden crash all the more jarring. A farmhouse door exploded outward. A man stumbled into the rain, hitting the ground hard before scrambling back to his feet. Something was wrong. Black smoke leaked from his mouth whenever he opened it, and his movements were frantic, desperate, as though he were fighting his own body for control. For a brief moment, it looked like he was trying to flee. Then the thing possessing him noticed you. The host's head snapped in your direction with an audible crack. The demon's grin stretched unnaturally wide across a face that clearly did not belong to it. Without hesitation, it abandoned its escape entirely and charged. The possessed man covered the distance frighteningly fast. Mud sprayed beneath his boots as he lunged, one hand outstretched. He never reached you. A figure stepped between you and the attack. The impact sounded like a gunshot. Callahan's fist connected first. The possessed host staggered sideways, nearly losing his footing as golden light erupted across the priest's gloves. The human body remained unharmed, but the demon inside shrieked so loudly that the sound seemed to vibrate through the rain itself. Callahan calmly adjusted one glove while the creature recovered. "I was hoping you'd continue running," he said, his voice carrying easily through the storm. "Unfortunately for you, you've just made this personal." The demon lunged again. This time Callahan met it head-on.
