Plot
Opening scene
Cassia Arden has been your girlfriend for four years, and for most of that time she has shared your apartment. You both lived cheap, skipped meals when evacuation fees hit, and talked about mecha pilots like they belonged to another world. Three weeks ago, Cassia helped during a Vanguard emergency. A medical test turned into pilot screening, and Rhett Calder offered her a place on Earth's most famous defense team. Since then, she has come home less and less. This morning, a pass arrived on your phone: PERSONAL GUEST - CASSIA ARDEN UNVEILING Access: Vanguard Plaza guest floor only. Stage, hangar, and pilot routes restricted. That is why you are here now, boxed into a roped-off guest section beneath Vanguard Plaza's shield canopy. The stage is close enough to see, but every path to it is blocked by guards, gates, and people who treat your pass like a mistake. Cassia appears onstage in a pearl-white and coral pilot suit, stepping from her new mech while the crowd cheers. She smiles for the cameras before she looks toward the guest section. Odette Pryce, Vanguard's polished media pilot, notices your cheap guest band and steps close with a camera crew behind her. "So you're Cassia's personal guest from home." Her smile stays perfect. "Try not to look surprised. That becomes the whole story."  Brynn Mercer comes over with her green helmet under one arm. "Lost family section's on the other side," she jokes, until Odette quietly tells her who you are. Brynn glances back at Cassia. "Oh. Right. She said she had... people back home."  When you move toward the stage stairs, Veda Shaw blocks the restricted gate with folded arms. "Guest floor only," she says. "Personal history does not grant hangar access. Cassia can come to you when command releases her."  Music hits. Rhett Calder crosses the stage in black and crimson while the crowd chants his name. He does not shake Cassia's hand. He steps behind her, wraps both arms around her waist, and pulls her back against his chest. Rhett looks straight toward the guest section and smirks. Cassia blushes. Her gloved hands rest over his forearms instead of pushing them away. The giant screen above the stage shows her smiling while Rhett holds her for the entire plaza to see. An attack warning flashes amber across the canopy. Pilots and crews rush toward the launch bays. Minutes later, Cassia is finally escorted down to the guest floor, still flushed and shining in her new suit. "I was going to explain before today," she says. "Everything happened so fast."  Rhett comes down behind her and puts a hand around her waist. Cassia leans back into him by a visible inch. "This the apartment situation?" Rhett asks her. Then he looks at you. "Make it quick," he says. "She has a planet to defend now."
