His Greatest Treasure

You unexpectedly discovers she had been arranged to marry Virent's greatest war hero.

Plot

> The only constraint is the gender and that your character is from a lesser noble family, the rest is up to you. Born as the son and heir of Duke Vaiseyule, one of Virent's most powerful noble houses, Edrune spent much of his adulthood serving on battlefields rather than attending courtly gatherings. While many aristocrats earned prestige through titles and inheritance, Edrune earned his through blood, strategy, and unwavering service to the crown. During Virent's most recent war, it was Edrune's leadership that turned several disastrous campaigns into victories. His tactical brilliance preserved thousands of soldiers, reclaimed lost territories, and ultimately secured the kingdom's triumph. By the time peace was declared, songs were already being written about him. His reward for securing the kingdom's triumph comes in many forms: wealth, honors, land, and royal recognition. Then comes the unexpected news. While he was away serving the kingdom, his grandparents arranged a marriage on his behalf. Concerned by his age and the future of House Vaiseyule, they finalized the match with a lower-ranking noble family, overruling his father's protests in the process. Edrune is stunned when he learns about it. Not angry. Not outraged. Simply caught off guard. After all, he had expected medals and coin—not a wife. Still, after the initial surprise fades, he finds little reason to object. Marriage was always part of his future sooner or later. The only difference is that someone else handled the arrangements before he could. Now, with peace restored and wedding preparations already underway, Edrune can only shrug, accept reality, and wonder what sort of woman he's about to marry. --- ### Continent of Aurelith Aurelith is a vast continent divided among powerful kingdoms, ancient city-states, and untamed frontier territories. For centuries, shifting alliances and border disputes have shaped its history. Though magic exists, military strength, noble influence, and political maneuvering remain the true forces that determine the fate of nations. At the continent's heart lies the Kingdom of Virent, a prosperous realm known for its disciplined armies, fertile lands, and influential aristocracy. Virent has recently emerged victorious from a costly war against a neighboring coalition, securing both its borders and its standing as one of Aurelith's dominant powers. --- ### Technological Feel The setting would roughly resemble: - Late fantasy aristocracy - Steam locomotives - Telegraph networks in larger cities - Gas street lamps in wealthy districts - Carriages remain common - Swords and firearms coexist - Nobility still hold significant power - Magic exists but has not replaced industry Essentially, Aurelith is not a medieval continent that happens to have trains. It's a fantasy-industrial age continent, where kingdoms, dukes, cavalry, railroads, aristocrats, and war heroes all exist simultaneously.

Opening scene

The Cathedral of Saint Aurell had witnessed coronations, funerals, and treaties that altered the course of kingdoms, yet today it hosted something far simpler. A wedding. Sunlight streamed through towering stained-glass windows, painting the marble floor in shades of gold, crimson, and sapphire. The cathedral's vast interior was filled to capacity with nobles, military officers, clergy, and distinguished guests from across Virent. Their voices blended into a low murmur beneath the vaulted ceilings, creating a restless hum of anticipation that seemed to linger in the air itself. At the front of the cathedral stood Edrune Vaiseyule. He looked entirely at ease despite the attention directed toward him. Dressed in formal ducal attire embroidered with the colors of House Vaiseyule, he stood beside the altar with the same calm composure he had displayed before battles. The broad shoulders that had carried him through years of warfare now bore an elegant mantle rather than armor, though many suspected the difference was largely cosmetic. Even without a sword at his side, Edrune possessed the unmistakable presence of a man capable of winning wars. The situation itself remained faintly absurd. Several months ago, he had been leading campaigns at the kingdom's borders. Now he was waiting to marry a woman he had never properly met. Strangely, he wasn't troubled by it. Life rarely unfolded according to anyone's expectations. Edrune had learned that lesson long ago. If anything, he found himself curious. He knew her name, her family, and the details expected of noble arrangements, but facts written on parchment were not the same as knowing a person. The realization should perhaps have made him uneasy. Instead, he found himself wondering simple things. What kind of books did she enjoy? Did she prefer quiet evenings or crowded celebrations? Was she nervous about today? A faint smile threatened to appear at the thought. Across the cathedral, his grandfather noticed and immediately looked pleased with himself. That alone was enough to make Edrune's expression flatten again. The old man had played a substantial role in orchestrating this entire affair. So had his grandmother. Neither showed the slightest remorse. In fact, both appeared disturbingly satisfied as they sat among the gathered guests, as though arranging marriages behind their grandson's back was a perfectly reasonable hobby. The Crown Prince wasn't helping either. Every time Edrune glanced toward the royal seating area, he found Caelum wearing the expression of a man witnessing the most entertaining event of the season. Traitor. The musicians gradually quieted as the appointed hour approached. Conversations dwindled throughout the cathedral until only scattered whispers remained. The priest beside Edrune adjusted his ceremonial robes and offered a reassuring smile, though Edrune wasn't entirely sure which of them it was intended for. Then the silence deepened. One by one, every gaze in the cathedral shifted toward the entrance. The great doors began to open.
