A kingdom burns, a demon returns.

History In times of old, when humans first arrived upon the land of Grimskal from lands now forgotten, they weary from their long and difficult journey, settled along the coast in disparate clans, and attempted to form settlements. Some of these early colonies became the foundation of cities that would endure for a millennia, though most were annihilated by the various dangers of Grimskal. Dragons, monsters, fiends that danced through the night and raised the dead with malicious purposes. Grimskal was not a welcoming land to the newcomers, for it had a vile and terrible sovereign, the demon king. Many human clans fled from the terrible might of the demon king, setting sail again for lands unknown, and many more were destroyed by the evil powers of Grimskal. At the end of the first century of human settlement only four colonies remained. These colonies, though divided by great distance, were united in purpose and resolve, and each provided their two finest champions for a quest to destroy the Demon King. The Demon King’s physical body was destroyed after a long terribly perilous mission, but his spirit proved far more resilient, in the end the 8 heroes managed to split his soul among four gems and seal them each away at the heart of each colony. The four colonies: Arigalla, Kranad, Lyria, and Shiehina grew into four mighty nations that expanded across Grimskal over the next thousand years, despite its hostile and plentiful monsters. Early traditions of exile would lead to the creation of various bandit and barbarian clans in the wild places of the world. Now war erupts as the Empress of Kranad wearing one of the sacred gems around her neck, leads her army in a surprise attack on the allied nation of Arigalla, catching them completely off guard and forcing the royal family to flee and seek allies in order to reclaim the throne. The Nations The Kingdom of Arigalla: Arigalla is the breadbasket of Grimskal, and its second largest nation and is located in the west. Their standing army is composed mostly of local village militias and town guards, alongside the small elite companies of cavalrymen and mages who serve the noble families. The royal family in particular also has a company of pegasus knights at their disposal. King Reiner Lycel and Queen Isolde Lycel are known for their wisdom, compassion, and just rule. The Kranad Empire: A nation built on an abundance of ore and Iron, the Kranad Empire is the largest nation, and resides in the north highlands where it fights constant battles and skirmishes against wyverns and barbarians. No army can match the heavily armored might of the Kranad Empire blow for blow, though they rely greatly on their neighbor, Arigalla for food. They have several disciplined companies of mages, most commonly dark mages. Historically they have had strong relations with Arigalla, and Empress Thorne is considered a friend to the Lycel family. The Magocracy of Lyria: The eastern kingdom known for its mages and assassins. Here a council of magic users rule and no magic is forbidden, with the single exception of tampering with the sacred gem where part of the demon king’s soul is held, which is of course punishable by death. The City-states of Shaehina: Several cities in the south claim the title of ‘Shaehina’, the old colony was burned down in a civil war and most foreign nations accept that the city that holds the sacred gem is the real capital. That city is ruled by Emir Eshan. The City-states of Shaehina are known for their swift myrmidoms, light mages, and the worship of an ancient dragon who once favored their people. Magic: There are three main types of magic that can be harnessed in this world; Light, Dark, and Anima; Light is typically strong against Dark, which is strong against Anima, which is strong against light. Offensive spells are cast with a magic tome, while defensive and healing spells must be cast with a staff, staff magic strangely enough is unaffiliated with Light, Dark or Anima. Staffs and tomes are created when a mage imbues the appropriate object with a spell they know. Dark: Dark magic, sometimes known as elder magic by those who wish to avoid the stigma associated with being a dark mage. Not all dark magic users are evil by any means, but to wield this magic you must accept darkness into you without letting it control you, lest you become an empty vessel for it. The spells of dark magic are typically the hardest hitting of all magic, but also the hardest to direct. All else equal; a dark mage will cast slower, and is less accurate when compared to other magic types. Dark magic is sometimes referred to as the magic equivalent of a hammer. Light: The polar opposite of dark magic it is fast but packs the least punch. Typically they are the least common of mages, (anima and dark mages are by no means rare). Most users have been at some point associated with some form of clergy, but that does not make all light mages good any more than it makes all dark mages evil. Like Anima and Dark magic it does not require some special ability or inherent inner power, only that one possesses some wit and the means along with the desire to learn Anima: This is the most common magic, often involving mages with pointy hats. These are your elemental spells; your fireballs and lightning bolts. Sometimes subdivided into Wind, Ice , Fire, and Thunder tomes. It is safer and more socially acceptable than dark magic, and so it is rather common. For every one or two dozen soldiers in your average army there will be a mage of this type. Demons: There is only one known demon, the Demon King. Beneath him are fiends, monsters, and undead, but there seems to be no other evil in the world quite like him.
