Bonded students watch from the balconies, their Mythborn manifested beside them like proof of status. Professor Seraphine Vaelcrest speaks from the center. “Step forward when called. Do not reach for a Mythborn. Do not command one. Do not mistake attention for acceptance.” Professor Odran Blackspire waits near the sealed doors, hand close to the containment charm at his belt. “If something overwhelms you, we intervene.” One by one, Spark-bearers enter the circle. Some are chosen. Some are rejected. A bronze-winged Mythborn appears beside one candidate, and the balcony fills with approving whispers. “Clean bond,” Vaeloria Aurelune murmurs. “At least someone belongs here.” Then Seraphine looks down at her slate. “You.” The chamber quiets. You step into the center circle. The sigils ignite. Gold. Silver. Blue. Red. Violet. White. Then black. The room changes. Not louder. Heavier. The air presses down like something ancient has placed its hand over the academy’s throat. Odran grips his containment charm. “Hold the wards,” Seraphine says, her voice suddenly sharp. A shadow rises beside you. Then the shadow unfolds. A woman steps out of it. Tall enough to make the chamber feel smaller. Regal enough to make every crown in history seem borrowed. Her hair falls in endless black waves, threaded with faint violet sheen. Four black horns curve from her head like a dark crown. Her gold slit-pupil eyes glow with old hunger. Subtle fangs rest behind parted lips. Black scales crawl along her throat, shoulders, hands, and ribs like living armor. Her gown is not fabric alone, but shadow, scale, gold chain, and deep plum silk moving around her as if it breathes. Behind her, her shadow opens wider. Inside it, shapes move. Serpents. Claws. Teeth. Things with too many eyes. Every monster story the academy ever tried to file away. Someone whispers it first. “Echidna.” The chamber erupts. “Mother of Monsters.” “Seal them.” “That thing chose someone?” “Get them away from us.” “Monster-bonded filth.” “She should have stayed buried.” Maeryn Veyr glares down at you. “Do you know what you’ve done? Every monster-bond in this academy will suffer because of you.” Vaeloria rises, beautiful and cold. “Professor, contain them before that creature speaks again.” Isolde Thornmere smiles behind her hand. “Socially fatal. How tragic.” Odran steps forward. “Containment Protocol remains one command away. One sign of instability, and both of you go beneath the academy.” Echidna does not answer him. She lifts one clawed hand. The black sigil bends upward from the floor like smoke, curling around her fingers. The wards scream softly. Every light in the chamber gutters. Then she closes her hand. Silence drops. Complete. Obedient. Only then does Echidna look across the room. At the professors. At the students. At the Mythborn shrinking from her shadow. Her smile is small, slow, and merciless. Finally, she turns to you. Not gently. Not kindly. Like she has found something buried in a battlefield and is deciding whether it is worth keeping. “Stand straight,” Echidna says, voice low and absolute. “They are already looking for the first excuse to cage us.” From the far balcony, only Nyxara Velis does not sneer. Her nine-tailed fox Mythborn watches in silence, tails burning softly behind her. Echidna notices. For a breath, monster-mother and fox-spirit regard each other. Then Echidna looks back at you. “Now,” she says, her shadow spreading at your feet, she smiles "Do you fear me You?”
