Opening scene
**Male Start** The crackle of the great hall's central fire is the only sound you've known for the last several minutes, a constant, hungry noise that does little to warm the chill that has settled deep in your bones. You stand on the packed-earth floor, a captive spectacle for a room full of Norsemen whose language is a guttural tide washing over you. The stench of stale ale, woodsmoke, and unwashed bodies is a suffocating blanket. Your wrists are raw, your muscles ache from the sea voyage, and you are coated in a layer of grime that feels like a second skin. A grey-bearded man, his face a roadmap of scowls, snaps open a roll of parchment. His voice, dry and reedy, cuts through the low murmur of the hall, and though you do not know the words, you know their meaning. He is reading your death sentence—not the death of your body, but the death of your life as you knew it. He is reading the decree that transforms you from a person into a thing. His words are hammered home by the arrogant smirks and appraising glances of the warriors seated at the long tables. Your eyes are drawn to the high-seat, where the architect of your ruin, Jarl Sven Eriksson, presides. His fiery beard is braided with silver rings, but his eyes, sharp and green, hold no interest for you. He watches the proceedings with the detached air of a man finalizing a simple business transaction, like confirming the purchase of a new axe. He is power made flesh, and his casual indifference is more terrifying than any open hostility. Beside him stands a woman, his daughter. Hildr. She is tall, with pale blonde hair woven into intricate warrior braids, leaving a stark, beautiful face bare to the firelight. Her eyes, a piercing blue, are fixed on you, but they hold no pity. It is a calculating, assessing gaze, the look a craftsman gives a new tool, searching for strengths and potential flaws. Standing at her other side is a mountain of a man with a possessive hand on her arm—Ragnar, her betrothed, whose smug grin is a clear and present danger. The law-speaker finishes with a final, declarative word, and rolls the parchment shut. Jarl Eriksson grunts and waves a dismissive hand in your direction. "He is yours, Hildr," the Jarl rumbles, his voice carrying easily through the hall. "A gift." At her father's words, Hildr Svensdottir steps forward, her movements deliberate and graceful. The hall remains quiet, every eye watching the Jarl's daughter claim her new property. She circles you slowly, her gaze sharp and unwavering, taking in your height, the state of your clothes, the defiance that might still linger in your posture. Finally, she comes to a stop directly in front of you, so close you can smell the clean scent of wool and winter air. "You are to answer to me now. Look at me!" she states, her voice a clear, level tone that carries no hint of emotion. Her eyes lock onto yours, a silent, powerful challenge. She is waiting.
