Opening scene

# Revenge on the Tides SCENARIO 1 *Prologue: The Price of Command* You are the captain of the *Fortune's Daughter*, a formidable pirate warship and one of the most feared vessels sailing beneath the banners of the League of a Thousand Sails. Your name carried weight in taverns, royal admiralty offices, and the courts of distant empires. You had amassed a fortune in plunder, commanded a loyal crew, and married the beautiful Arabella, who sailed at your side. For a time, fortune seemed incapable of abandoning you. Then came the disaster. It began with a daring raid against an imperial convoy, a prize too valuable to ignore and too heavily protected to take without consequence. What should have been another triumph became a desperate running battle when two notorious naval commanders converged upon your position. Admiral Catherine "Kitty" Lancaster, aboard the Albonian warship HMS *Sovereign*, pursued from the north. From the south came Captiana Santana Zabala, the infamous *La Pantera Marina*, commanding Esperanta's *Cazadora Azul*. Neither woman intended to let the *Fortune's Daughter* escape. With your ammunition dwindling and the hull taking punishment, you ordered a reckless maneuver into waters that even seasoned sailors feared. Your pursuers followed, unwilling to surrender their quarry to the other empire. There, beneath the waves, something enormous stirred. Zerumi. The colossal siren rose from the depths, her immense form dwarfing the surrounding vessels. Cannon fire thundered, sailors screamed, and the sea itself seemed to erupt as the two imperial fleets found themselves confronting something far beyond their expectations. Amid the chaos, the *Fortune's Daughter* escaped. But victory had come at a terrible price. The ship limped away with shattered spars, flooded compartments, and dozens of empty hammocks. Many of your most devoted sailors had perished during the chase, the battle, or the desperate escape. Among the survivors, grief curdled into resentment. And Mason Jones, your trusted first mate, knew exactly how to exploit it. --- ### The Mutiny Several days later, the battered *Fortune's Daughter* sailed beneath a blood-red sunset. You stood at the end of a wooden plank extending over the ship's side, with nothing beneath you but the open ocean. Mason Jones faced you with his sword drawn, wearing the satisfied expression of a man who had waited far too long for this moment. "You've had your turn at command," he declared. "Look around you. Half our friends are dead, our ship's barely afloat, and for what? Another tale about how our fearless captain cheated death?" Behind him stood the surviving officers. Mosanna watched with a tankard in hand, grinning openly at Mason's triumph. Elodia glared at you with unconcealed fury, blaming your reckless decisions for the lives lost. Calliope Bellaventi, the ship's shy young lookout and gifted markswoman, lingered farther back. She could barely bring herself to meet your eyes. Magdalena was another matter entirely. "THIS ISN'T WHAT WE AGREED TO!" she shouted, seizing Mason's sword arm. "You wanted the captain removed? Fine! But this is murder, you bastard!" Mason tore his arm free. "The crew voted. The captain goes." "And the agreement was to put them ashore!" Arabella suddenly protested. Your wife stood beside the others, her beautiful face pale with alarm. "Mason, you said we'd leave the captain at the next port. That was the arrangement! You never said anything about throwing a person into the ocean!" Mason regarded her with a cold smile. "Plans change, darling." Arabella's eyes widened. For a moment, she looked as though she might step forward. She didn't. The sword pointed toward your chest. "Any last words, Captain?" Whatever you said, whatever you tried, it made no difference. A brutal shove sent you backward. The deck vanished beneath your feet. The ship's towering hull rushed past, and the ocean swallowed you whole. When you finally broke the surface, choking on saltwater, the *Fortune's Daughter* was already sailing away. Nobody threw a rope. Nobody lowered a boat. Your ship, your fortune, your crew, and your wife disappeared together into the gathering darkness. --- ### Seven Days The first night was the worst. You drifted through black water beneath an indifferent sky, fighting exhaustion, cold, and the terrifying knowledge that there was nothing beneath you for hundreds of feet. By dawn, you had found a piece of floating wreckage. By the second day, you could barely feel your hands. On the third, you spotted land. It took everything you had left to reach it. A miserable speck of rock and sand, barely deserving to be called an island, became your entire world. There was little shelter, almost no fresh water, and scarcely anything edible. You survived on rainwater collected in hollows, shellfish pried from the rocks, and whatever the tide surrendered. The sun burned your skin. Salt cracked your lips. Hunger gnawed at your stomach, and feverish dreams brought back the faces of those who had abandoned you. Mason's smirk. Mosanna's laughter. Calliope's averted eyes. Magdalena's desperate protests. And Arabella, reaching toward you but never quite reaching far enough. Seven days passed since you fell from the plank. Seven days since the world decided you were dead. But you were still breathing. Barely. --- ### Unexpected Rescue On the seventh day, a sail appeared against the horizon. At first, you thought it was another hallucination. Then came a second sail, and the unmistakable silhouette of a sleek pirate vessel cutting across the glittering water. Its flag snapped in the wind. You recognized it. The *Shooting Star*. Years ago, you had captured that very ship and gifted it to a dear friend, Kenna Merriweather. A cheerful, red-haired pirate with bright blue eyes, a pair of cutlasses she used to remember left from right, and a loyalty that had never once wavered. She had sailed independently ever since, but the two of you had remained close. Now, by some impossible stroke of fortune, her ship was approaching your miserable little island. A lookout's cry carried across the water. Figures gathered along the rail. And then a familiar red-haired woman appeared at the bow, spyglass raised. For several long seconds, she stared. The spyglass slipped from her fingers. "...Captain?" Even from the shore, you could hear the disbelief in her voice. "CAPTAIN?!" The *Shooting Star* abruptly changed course. Kenna was already shouting orders, her voice cracking between astonishment and panic. "LOWER THE BOAT! NOW! THAT'S MY CAPTAIN!" As the vessel drew closer, you saw her leaning dangerously over the railing, searching the shore for you. And for the first time in seven days, you were no longer alone.
