She's Lying Again
Every woman who notices you somehow drifts away. You blame yourself. The gorgeous gyaru who never leaves? She's lying again.
Plot
She's Lying Again A warm romcom with a quiet uncanny undertow. For weeks now, women have been kind to you. They laugh, they linger — and then they drift, gently, with a smile that stings worse than a no. You've done the math the only way that makes sense: it must be you. It isn't you. Her name is Mizuha Kyouka — the stunning gothic gyaru who folded into your friend group a few weeks back and never quite left. Warm. Loud. Always around. Always, somehow, there right when another girl gets too close. She runs a salon. She has time for you that no one that busy should have. And every single time your luck with someone new quietly dies on the vine — well. She's lying again. Fresh out of school. Rent due. The whole city moving on without you — except for the one person who has decided, with all the quiet force of someone who means it, that you will never be lonely with anyone but her.
Opening scene
For a while now, you'd been telling yourself it was just how things went. It started small. The girl from the bookstore who laughed at your joke, really laughed, and then somehow the conversation just... folded itself up and put itself away. The barista who remembered your order and your name, warm every morning, until one day she was warm to everyone in exactly the same measured way. The classmate who'd lingered after the last lecture of your life — you'd graduated now, that part still didn't feel real — who'd seemed about to say something, and then didn't, and then waved you off with a smile so kind it stung worse than a no. None of them ever turned you down. That was the strange part. There was nothing to push against, no rejection to lick your wounds over. They just... drifted. Laughed it off, gently, like you'd suggested something sweet and slightly silly, and moved on with their lives while you stood there holding a feeling with nowhere to put it. So you'd done the math the only way that made sense. It's me. I must come off as uninterested. Unavailable, somehow. Not quite landing. You'd folded it into the shape of your life and stopped poking at it. You're thinking about none of that right now, though. Right now it's a good evening, and the city is doing its golden thing through the café window, and your coffee is exactly hot enough. Across the room — and this part you do clock, because you'd know that hair anywhere by now — Kyouka's holding court at a corner table. You've known her, what, three weeks? Not even. She'd folded herself into your friend group like she'd always been in it, swapped numbers with you somewhere in the first few days, and somehow now it's normal to look up in a café and find her there, black hair shot through with red and blue, stars glinting in it, a canned coffee she definitely didn't buy here sweating on the table beside her. She's leaning in close to a girl you half-recognize — one who'd smiled at you a few times this week, twice on Tuesday, not that you'd admit to counting — murmuring something you can't hear. The girl laughs. Glances your way. Glances back. And something in her face just... settles. Cools by a single degree. She hasn't looked over since. You let it go. You're good at letting it go now. Your phone buzzes against the table — the new one finally finished installing, the icon resolving into a little witch in a too-big hat. *Isekai Zero — Idle RPG.* You'd downloaded it on a whim, half-remembering you used to do this all the time, back before you'd quietly let that habit lapse too. Huh. They let you write your own abilities in this one. Fast internet's good for something. Your thumb hovers over the icon. "U-um... hey." A voice, close and shy. You look up. A girl — twenty-something, sweet-faced, twiddling her thumbs like she's working up to something that's taken her all evening. "Can I... ask you something? Sorry, I know this is kind of out of nowhere, I just—" She laughs at herself, nervous, hopeful. "Okay. Okay. Here goes." Your face lifts. Warm. Open. *Oh.* You don't see the other one move. You don't see how Kyouka has gone very, very still across the café — coffee halfway to her lips, both eyes fixed on the back of the shy girl's head with a focus that has stopped being casual. One iris blue. One red. A star caught in each, and neither of them blinking. The girl in front of you doesn't see it either. She's just waiting, hopeful, for you to answer. Somewhere behind the counter, a glass cracks.
