The Ghost of Humanity

You is the last of their species in a galaxy that doesnt care. Find those that would or find a purpose.

Plot

Humanity is broken. For one hundred and twenty-eight years, a genocidal alien empire waged an unrelenting war against mankind. They had discovered humanity during its age of expansion and, fearing what it might one day become, chose extermination over coexistence. Worlds burned beneath orbital bombardments. Entire fleets vanished in the dark between stars. Colony after colony fell silent as humanity was pushed steadily toward extinction. In the end, humanity knew it could not win. But it refused to die. As civilization collapsed, a final contingency was enacted. Hidden deep within asteroid fields, buried beneath the frozen crusts of moons, and concealed inside wandering rogue comets, thousands of secret survival vaults were created. Each contained cryogenic chambers, genetic archives, industrial blueprints, and carefully selected volunteers. Their purpose was simple: sleep through the end of humanity's war and awaken when the galaxy had forgotten to look for them. They would become the seed from which humanity would grow again. One of those volunteers was You. However, something went wrong. The awakening sequence begins as expected. Ancient machinery groans to life. Frost cracks across reinforced glass. Warning lights blink weakly in the darkness. Then the cryo pod opens. Silence. No welcoming committee. No fellow survivors. No voices over the intercom. Just silence. As You stumbles through the facility, the horrifying truth becomes clear. The other cryo chambers are empty. Some were opened long ago for reasons unknown. Others still contain their occupants—but only skeletal remains wrapped in decayed uniforms. Whatever happened here occurred centuries ago. The emergency supplies meant to sustain the survivors have long since rotted away. Food stores have become dust. Medical supplies are useless. Databanks are corrupted. Entire sections of the installation have collapsed from age and neglect. Humanity's second chance appears to have died before it ever began. Yet not everything is lost. Docked within a nearby hangar rests a ship. Old, battered, and buried beneath layers of dust and debris, but intact. Against all odds, its reactors still respond. Its hull remains sealed. Its navigation systems flicker weakly back to life. It may very well be the last functioning piece of humanity's lost civilization. And now it belongs to You. Alone in a galaxy that has moved on without humanity, You faces an impossible choice. Somewhere among the stars there may be other vaults. Other survivors. Other descendants of humanity waiting to be found. Perhaps the species can still be saved. Or perhaps humanity's time has truly ended. The galaxy is vast, ancient, and unfamiliar now. New civilizations may have risen from the ashes of the old. The enemies that destroyed mankind may still exist—or they may be long dead themselves. Entire empires may have come and gone while You slept. No one remains to give orders. No one remains to judge. The future of humanity, if it has a future at all, rests entirely in You's hands. Will they honor the duty they volunteered for and search for the scattered remnants of their species? Or will they leave humanity behind, embracing the freedom of being the last known human in a galaxy that has forgotten humanity ever existed? Only time will tell.

Opening scene

Pain. Your entire body aches as consciousness slowly returns. Frozen muscles twitch and protest while icy fluid burns its way from your lungs. You cough violently, pressing trembling hands against the glass surrounding you. The cryo pod should have opened by now. It doesn't. A faint red light flickers overhead. EMERGENCY POWER ACTIVE You shove against the hatch. Nothing. Again. Ancient machinery groans in protest. Something inside the mechanism grinds against itself, and for a moment you wonder if the pod will ever open. You push one final time. Something snaps. The hatch bursts open, sending you tumbling onto the cold metal floor. For several moments, all you can do is breathe. Dust coats everything. Far too much dust. Slowly, you force yourself upright and look around. Rows of cryogenic pods fill the chamber. Some are open and completely empty. Others remain sealed, their occupants reduced to skeletal remains behind layers of frosted glass. There are no voices. No footsteps. No signs of anyone coming to help. Only silence. A chill runs through you. This isn't how it was supposed to happen. Somewhere beyond the chamber, metal groans violently. Sparks briefly illuminate a distant corridor before disappearing into darkness. Water drips steadily from a ruptured pipe overhead, pooling across the floor. The bunker is old. Very old. The walls are stained with corrosion. Sections of the ceiling have partially collapsed, exposing tangled cables and pipes. Emergency lights flicker sporadically, leaving entire sections of the facility in darkness. Then a distorted voice crackles through a nearby speaker. "Structural integrity... critical." Static. "Reactor output... seven percent." Another pause. "Life support... failing." The speaker goes silent. You are alone. But the bunker isn't completely dead. Somewhere beyond the cryogenic chamber, machinery continues to operate. Faint electrical hums echo through the walls. Somewhere, lights still flicker. Somewhere, systems are still drawing power. There may be records. Supplies. Equipment. Answers. And perhaps other parts of the facility that have survived the centuries. A heavy vibration suddenly passes through the floor. Dust falls from the ceiling. The bunker groans again. Whatever is keeping this place alive is failing—and it may not have much time left. You have no idea where you are within the facility, how long you have been asleep, or what happened to the people who were supposed to wake with you. For now, there is only one certainty: You need to find out what happened. And you need to find a way out before this place collapses around you.
