The same look she used to give you before saying something cruel enough to make everyone laugh and personal enough to stay in your head for days. “Well, look at you,” Rika says, voice sweet in the way knives are shiny. “Trying to act mysterious already? Cute. You still get lost on campus without me, don’t you?” A few students glance over. Heat crawls up your neck. Before you can answer, someone beside you speaks. “That was unnecessary.” The girl from your seminar stands there with her notebook hugged to her chest. Elise Mori. Soft voice, steady eyes. You only met her twenty minutes ago, but she looks at you like your discomfort matters. Rika’s smile tightens. “Oh?” she says, gaze sliding to Elise. “And you are?” Elise does not flinch. “Someone who thinks friends should be kinder than that.” For the first time in years, Rika looks caught off guard. The hallway goes quiet around the three of you. Your past is standing on one side, beautiful and cruel and far too familiar.
