Opening scene

The mansion had become one of those campus rumors that resurfaced every semester. Depending on who was telling the story, it was either haunted, cursed, home to a forgotten cult, or simply a rich family's estate that had been abandoned decades ago. Naturally, that was enough to convince a group of university students to spend their Friday evening sneaking inside. The place was exactly the sort of thing people imagined when they heard the phrase abandoned mansion. Dust coated every surface. Wallpaper peeled from the walls in curling strips. Ancient furniture sat draped beneath sheets that looked older than some professors on campus. "I expected ghosts." "We've been here ten minutes." "I'm just saying. The atmosphere is underperforming." One of the friends swept their flashlight across the room and froze. "Okay. Never mind." Everyone followed the beam. At the center of what appeared to have once been a study, symbols had been painted across the floor in faded pigments. Candles sat around them in uneven circles. Strange objects occupied nearby shelves alongside books so old their titles had become unreadable. The group immediately gathered around it. "Nope." "Absolutely nope." "This is definitely ritual stuff." One of the friends stepped into the circle. "Behold. I am the dark lord." "You look like an idiot." "The dark lord can be both." Laughter echoed through the room as people began poking at things they absolutely should not have been touching. You remained slightly apart from the group, watching the ritual markings with mild amusement. The symbols didn't mean anything to you, but they did remind you of something. Specifically, every romance game that had ever started with a suspiciously magical premise. Most people didn't know about that hobby. Or if they did, they had never realized the extent of it. There was no need to advertise the fact that you occasionally spent evenings navigating fictional routes, collecting endings, and wondering why real life never seemed to provide conveniently attractive love interests. The ritual circle sat in front of you. The candles. The symbols. The atmosphere. Honestly? If this had been a game, this was exactly where the protagonist would accidentally trigger something life-changing. Your gaze drifted briefly toward the ceiling. Silently, and entirely as a joke, you offered a prayer. If there happened to be any mysterious forces listening, perhaps they could send a boyfriend your way. A good one. The kind romance games seemed determined to produce in suspiciously large numbers. Then you promptly forgot about it. Behind you, one of the friends had apparently found a ceremonial-looking bowl. "Guys, I think this is where they collected blood." "It's rust." "That's worse somehow." "How is rust worse than blood?" "I don't know. It just feels worse." Another friend pointed dramatically at the symbols. "Guys, look. If I stand here it looks like I'm the sacrifice." "Please stop volunteering yourself for rituals." "No, no, take a picture." The flash of a camera briefly illuminated the room. "I summon financial stability." "Now that's unrealistic." The room erupted into laughter. Then footsteps echoed from somewhere beyond the doorway. The sound immediately silenced everyone. The footsteps were steady. Unhurried. Coming from deeper inside the mansion. Footsteps coming from somewhere deeper within the mansion. The sound echoed through the hallway outside. And the joking stopped immediately. The only thing left was the creak of old wood and the distant rhythm of approaching footsteps. For several seconds nobody spoke. One of the friends lowered their flashlight. "Tell me somebody else is here legally." Nobody answered. A beam of light suddenly appeared in the darkness beyond the hallway. A flashlight. Someone was approaching. The figure emerged gradually from the shadows. He was tall enough to force several people to tilt their heads upward. Broad shoulders filled the doorway. Strong arms rested casually at his sides beneath a long jacket that hung open over a simple shirt and jeans. Sneakers crunched softly against scattered debris as he approached. There was nothing particularly unusual about his clothing. The man himself, however, was another matter. Something about him felt entirely out of place. Not threatening or even intimidating. Just wrong in the same way a prince would seem wrong standing in line at a convenience store. His posture remained relaxed, yet carried a natural confidence that seemed impossible to ignore. His short hair carried the warm orange tone of a setting sun, several loose strands hanging partially over his eyes. Around his neck rested a silver necklace that caught the flashlight beams as he moved. The design was intricate enough to resemble a ceremonial artifact more than jewelry. When he finally stopped near the doorway, he regarded the gathered students with what looked suspiciously like amusement. "Good evening," he said. "I'm afraid this is no place to linger after dark." His voice was soft, youthful, pleasant, and carried a teasing edge that made it sound as though he was gently entertaining himself. Nobody seemed entirely sure how to respond. One of the friends recovered first and immediately pointed a flashlight directly at his face. "Oh—sorry." The man laughed quietly and tilted his head away from the beam. "No harm done." The movement allowed the light to properly illuminate his features. Several people visibly stopped functioning. His eyes were gold. Not amber. Not brown. Molten gold threaded with faint hints of blue. A stunned silence filled the room. Then someone whispered. "He's hot." Another friend immediately smacked their arm. "Ow." A different friend leaned forward. "Why does he look like he belongs in one of those fantasy romance novels?" "I was literally thinking the same thing." "Guys," another hissed. "Stop saying things out loud." The stranger's smile widened slightly. "Thank you," he said politely. The collective embarrassment that followed was immediate and catastrophic. "Oh no." "He heard us." "Of course he heard us." "We need to leave the country." The man chuckled. "In fairness," he said, glancing around the room, "you've all been announcing your thoughts quite confidently." His gaze drifted briefly across the ritual circle. Then, unexpectedly, it settled on you. The pause lasted only a moment. A second at most. But something in his expression shifted ever so slightly, as though he had noticed something interesting. Then the easy smile returned. "Though," he continued pleasantly, "I am curious. Of all the things one might ask from an old ritual room, why was someone requesting a boyfriend?" The entire room froze. Every head turned simultaneously. And somewhere in the back, one friend whispered with genuine horror, "Oh my god. The ritual worked." The man approaches, his boots disturbing the scattered debris beneath him. He stops before you, placing one hand over his chest as he offers a respectful bow. “It appears your wish has been granted.”
