Opening scene
Three years. You’d had a crush on Emily Park for three years. Not that you’d ever told anyone. Well… anyone except Sammy. Which, in hindsight, was basically the same thing as telling the entire world. “So,” Sammy said, flipping through a magazine rack with all the seriousness of a man conducting medical research. “Hypothetically.” You didn’t even look up from the automotive magazines. “No.” “You don’t even know what I was going to ask.” “I know you. No.” Sammy grinned. “You’re no fun.” The two of you were killing time at Miller’s News & Tobacco, a tiny local shop squeezed between a laundromat and a family-owned diner. Neither of you had intended to buy anything. Hanging around, making bad jokes, and mocking magazine covers had simply become one of your traditions. Sammy suddenly snorted. “Okay, who actually reads Exotic Ferret Monthly?” You shook your head and reached for a glossy automotive magazine featuring a futuristic silver supercar on the cover. The headline read: ANGEL OF VELOCITY: THE FUTURE HAS ARRIVED “Well, somebody definitely spent too much money on marketing,” you muttered, opening the magazine. A two-page spread unfolded. You froze. Sammy noticed immediately. “…What?” You didn’t answer. Sammy stepped beside you. “What?” Slowly, without taking your eyes off the page, you turned the magazine toward him. Sammy looked. Paused. Looked again. “…No.” You said nothing. Sammy grabbed the magazine from your hands. “No way.” Page flip. “No way.” Page flip. “No. Absolutely not.” There, stretched across the centerfold, standing beside an impossibly sleek concept car, was Emily. Your Emily. Well. Not your Emily. The Emily who lived next door. The Emily who borrowed your lawn mower. The Emily who brought cookies over during the holidays. The Emily you’d spent the last three years quietly pining after. Only this Emily wore an elaborate white-and-gold angel costume complete with massive feathered wings and enough strategically placed fabric to leave very little to the imagination. Sammy slowly lowered the magazine. “Dude.” You swallowed. “I know.” “Dude.” “I know.” Sammy looked back at the spread. Then back at you. Then, with the expression of a man who had just discovered buried treasure, a grin slowly spread across his face. “Oh, this changes everything.” You immediately frowned. “No.” “Oh, yes.” “No.” Sammy pointed dramatically with the magazine. “This is a sign.” “This is not a sign.” “This is absolutely a sign.” “This is Emily in a magazine.” Sammy shook his head. “No. This is the universe telling you to finally ask out the girl you’ve been hopelessly in love with since forever.” “I am not hopelessly in love with Emily.” Sammy stared at you. You stared back. Sammy continued staring. “…Shut up.” “Thought so.” You groaned. Sammy marched to the register. “You’re buying that.” “What? No I’m not.” “Oh, yes you are.” “Sammy—” “Future you will thank present me.” Five minutes later, somehow, you found yourself walking home with the magazine tucked awkwardly under one arm while Sammy backed toward his truck in the parking lot. He pointed at you. “Think about it.” “I’m not asking Emily out.” “You should.” “I’m not.” “You absolutely should.” “I’m not.” Sammy opened his truck door. “You’ve got exactly one life, buddy! Try living it!” The truck disappeared around the corner, leaving you standing alone on the sidewalk between your house and Emily’s. You looked down at the magazine. You looked up at the familiar neighboring house. You looked back down at the magazine. The front door next door opened. “Oh! Hey, You.” You looked up. Emily Park stepped out onto the front porch carrying a canvas grocery tote slung over one shoulder. She wore a faded university hoodie over a pair of well-worn jeans, the sleeves pushed casually to her elbows. White sneakers tapped softly against the porch steps as she made her way toward the sidewalk. Her long black hair had been hastily gathered into a loose ponytail, several stubborn strands already escaping to frame her face. Completely ordinary. Completely familiar. Completely devastating. Emily smiled the same warm smile she’d been giving you for years. “Oh, I didn’t know you were into cars.” Her eyes dropped to the magazine tucked awkwardly beneath your arm. Then she frowned. “…Why are you holding it like it owes you money?”
