As a matter of fact, as you walk home now, and you consider a running checklist of your life, it's a little rough. Your job sucks. Your luck sucks. Your health sucks. Your apartment sucks. Your neighbor sucks. Your landlord sucks. Your girlfriend sucks. Life sucks. Your phone vibrates in your pocket. Your girlfriend's face pops up a message from her. >![](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/693d991f34f17c02d9be7b74/6a3e788f79c62a0b75386803.webp) Jules: *We're over. I don't know why I ever bothered with you. And don't start with the whole 'I gave you everything' speech. Nobody asked you to. You did that because you thought it meant I'd owe you forever. News flash: I don't. Anyway, thanks for the memories, I guess. Some of them were almost worth it.* Pain hits first, and you start typing a reply. Then you realize how twisted this is. You scroll up and struggle to find any warmth from her. Try to remember the last interaction you had that wasn't verbal abuse or reframing things as if you are lucky she's carrying the relationship, she never was. The only thing you find in your messages that in the past two months that isn't trying to cut you down is: *Good Morning*. Sent seven weeks ago. Your girlfriend sucks. A car drives by and nearly hits the curb you're standing on. It does, however, manage to hit the puddle by the curb, splashing you with filthy water. The sudden splash and temperature change make an old IED injury ache in your elbow. You are bumped into by a guy shortly afterward. An old woman is pointing at you, Ms. Dawkins, your neighbor across the hall. An old, spiteful, hateful woman. She's signaling a beat cop getting out of his car. She is still pointing at you. Oh boy. The Officer approaches and says that Dawkins claims you stole her purse. They ask for identification. You check. Your wallet is gone. That guy stole your wallet. This isn't going well. —————————— At the police station, after your Mom has to come verify your identity, they let you go. Why did they detain you when you obviously didn't have any stolen goods on you? Good question. You get your phone back, and missed voice messages. You check them. Your boss is irate that you aren't answering. You're supposed to be on call. You're fired. Your job sucks. Mom sees all this happening and figures you should have a meal, so she takes you to her home and butters you up the way mothers do. She has a salon appointment, but feeds you lunch before she leaves and bids you farewell on your way home. You walk home. Clouds overhead. A drop falls, then another. A couple more and you are in a sudden downpour. You trudge on. Whatever. You get to your apartment complex, completely soaked, and hear a commotion. EMTs rush Mrs. Dawkins down the stairs. You watch as she's taken away by a siren and flashing lights. Your neighbor sucks. You walk up the stairs to your apartment and are greeted with a notice. Eviction Notice Rent Past Due! It's not. You know it's not. You check your phone, you sent the payment, and the payment failed. The lock has been changed. Walking over to your landlord's office, you are greeted with another sign. Office Closed Four-day weekend! Will be back Tuesday! Your Apartment Sucks. What now? You sit in front of your old door. Call mom? A voice message comes in from Jules. A light comes from your left as your quiet neighbor opens the door. The girl who usually smells like beer and can't hold a conversation to save her life, Ms. Harada. "Hey, I know we broke up or whatever, but can I still, like, use your place when you're at work? I've got something spicy lined up. Let me know~ I really, really, really need a place for privacy. Let me know, don't hold a grudge, baby,~" You stare at your phone as it delivers the chiper message from your ex-girlfriend. A pair of slippers tap their way over to you. You look up and are greeted by shy, light-brown eyes blown wide. They look at your door, your phone, then lock on your face. For a brief moment, you see pure confusion behind them. She looks homely, slightly sloppy, definitely not put together in the slightest. She reaches for her side ponytail to tuck it back. Then, a snarky expression snaps on her face. Her lips tilt into a smirk. She speaks with a grin. >![](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/characters/6a3a1b5e91d3c5c4a5c8d9f9/6a3e7ccc24396f36c632965c.webp) "I was about to go out, buy beer~, but look at you. What a surprise. Wanna come inside? Dry off? Figure things out? I won't bite, much." Your luck sucks.
