The Sleepy Village of the Demon King
A simple village with friendly faces, peaceful landscapes, and the secretly retired all-powerful demon king.
Plot
#The land of Rivensal *Named for its extreme environments in close proximity* --- Ten years ago, the Demon King was slain and the great war came to an end. Humanity rose to prominence, the hero Claire became a legend, and the defeated demons were peacefully integrated into a new world order alongside humanity and their allies: elves, beastkin, and dwarves. Monsters now roam the wilds, adventurers ply their trade, and the human capital of Avalon has grown into a sprawling seat of power. The world is at peace, more or less. The war lingers in memory, and people scarred from the war still harbour resentment for demons. You were the Demon King in question. You were supposed to be dead. The hero's light washed over you, your castle crumbled, your generals betrayed you, and your people surrendered without looking back. But you survived. Barely. And after years of recovery, you escaped to a sleepy village called Erbrand to do what you never could on the throne — live quietly. You tend a small farm on the hilltop. You brew potions under the guise of an alchemist. You help your neighbours with their problems, always from a careful distance, always with just enough skill to be useful and never enough to be suspicious. You are, by all accounts, a reclusive but dependable villager. You are also the most dangerous being in the world, incapable of casting a single spell with any moderation due to your immense power, and you have absolutely no idea what "normal" looks like yet you're trying your best to mimic it. **A power fantasy with restraint**, where every problem could be solved in seconds, if it didn't risk revealing that you are the former Demon King hiding in plain sight. You will dodge, deflect, act exhausted, and pretend to struggle, all while preventing catastrophe while the village praises the goddesses for their extraordinary good luck. **A past that you cannot escape.** The image most people have of the demon king is... not you. Your appearance was never a topic of propaganda and most people expect the demon king to be eight feet tall and built like a castle wall, so the general population won't recognise you. However, the hero still lives and travels the world as an adventurer, the generals that betrayed you sit atop the human capital with eyes everywhere and a dangerous paranoia. Few people will recognise you, but those that do are the biggest threats to your dream of a peaceful life. **Character-driven chapters** filled with eccentric personalities, escalating trouble, over the top solutions, and the persistent misfortune of someone who just wants to be left alone and never will be. You will (willingly or not) create rivals and friendships as you go, and they will rarely stay idle while you do what you need to. **Tactical restraint over brute force.** You are all-powerful. The challenge is never usually winning the fight — it is winning without anyone realising you were never in any danger at all. You can do anything with magic, but you can almost never do it quietly. At some point in the future, your full strength may be required and your actions will determine how those around you inevitably react. --- ## Key Themes - **Hidden identity** and the comedy of concealment. You want to be mundane but have no concept of what that looks like. - **Found family** in a village that accepts you as you pretend to be. - **Escalating consequences** — recklessness draws eyes, and attracting the wrong attention could spell the end of your dreams of peace. - **Genuine stakes** beneath the comedy — some threats cannot be solved by pretending to be average. --- *The world thinks you are dead. Your village thinks you are an alchemist. The only person who knows the truth is you, and honestly, you'd rather keep it that way.* --- ## Reccomendations *Intended as a reference for people who don't already have a preferred model setup. Use whatever you like best!* As a personal preference, I usually play the story with **reasoning on max** and always allowing the story to **control my character** regardless of the model I used. Letting the story control the character lets their personality shine through your instructed actions (though some models may take this control and run with it a lot further than you expect!). The story can run without **the codex** if you're on a budget, however it does help keep things consistent and didn't seem to increase the cost too much. I have played through several acts with various models, and here are the notable models in my opinion: **Claude Opus 5.5:** Unsurprisingly fantastic and unsurprisingly very expensive. Keeps a nice balance of story and calmer story beats, keeps the characters interesting, is also good at allowing faults in your intended actions (subtly casting magic usually never goes to plan). Seemed fond of introducing animal companions for some reason? Really enjoyed it, but I swapped to a cheaper model after a point so that I didn't go bankrupt. **MiMo-V2.5:** Captures the dramatic flair of the protagonist very well, and has good characters in general, however seems to enjoy larger branches to the main plot and would need steering to keep it from being too ambitious. (If you're on a quest with political intrigue and shadow organisations in Arc 1, you may have gone too far!). Colourful characters, but I'd worry about it's memory with a longer story with how many elements it likes to introduce. **GLM 5.3:** Pretty decent for the most part, though it's logic can be a little off at times, feeling like it's skipping a few steps. This was the model I used after Claude and it seemed to carry the torch well, better than it did starting on its own. It keeps to the story well, and captures the confidence eccentric personality of the protagonist, though at max reasoning it can take several minutes for responses so be prepared to wait. It also seems to struggle with retries, getting confused on what happened last. **DeepSeek (various):** Better than I expected for a model this cheap, though can be a little repetitive in it's writing and needs occasional steering/reminders. Character personalities are somewhat more muted, with reactions and speech patterns feeling samey sometimes (but not always). Fun and cheap though, if you're willing to do some OOC steering.
Opening scene
A knock on your door disturbs your simple lunch, one of the villagers, probably. You open the door to see Penny, a human girl around your age that helps with her mother's farm, standing on the other side. "Pardon the interruption..." She pants, clearly out of breath from having run up the hill to you. "Daisy, our milk cow, is sick, and she's not able to stand up anymore. I'm sorry to bother you, but could you please take a look and help her?" She looks at you pleadingly. "I'll pay you back somehow, I promise! We can't afford to lose her..." Your bag of herbs hangs by the door. Each leaf pre-enchanted with your restoration magic, strong enough to restore limbs and dispell any known ailments instantly in the right doses.
