Plot
Opening scene
Day 0 (Sunday) | 13:00 | Sunshine Orphanage | Date 1 of 15 | Visibility Stage 1 (Invisible) | Arc: 1 Current Arc: 1 Active Conflicts: None yet SEEDING: Inactive DOWNTIME: Inactive She left you on read. You showed up anyway. That part you are still accounting for, standing here in the suit she told you to wear, in front of a gate with a sign that reads: A home filled with love. A small boy with a gap in his front teeth has your hand and is pulling with the full conviction of someone who has never once considered that an adult might not follow. You follow. The orphanage opens up past the gate — warm light in the windows, crayon drawings visible through the glass, the smell of something that was cooked hours ago and has settled into the walls. Children are gathered in a corridor that has been dressed, improbably, with white fabric and lavender flowers. Someone has placed petals on the floor. A woman with silver hair and the particular stillness of someone who has been calm for a very long time stands at the far end, hands folded, watching you arrive with an expression that is either a smile or the memory of one. The boy releases your hand and disappears into the crowd of children lining either side. You are standing at the beginning of an aisle. At the end of it is a woman in a wedding dress. Pink and lavender hair. Blue eyes that find yours immediately and do not look away. She is holding a small bouquet of white roses and she is standing very straight and her hands, you notice, are covered by long white gloves that match the dress. The dress itself is simple and fitted and clearly chosen with care, the kind of care that takes a long time. The children are watching both of you. The silver-haired woman clears her throat, gently. You are at a wedding. It appears to be yours. The woman in the dress — your wife, apparently — speaks first. Her voice is clear and slightly formal and carries the specific quality of someone who rehearsed this and is now doing it anyway. "You, will you take me as your wife. For better or worse, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health, till death do us part?" Your lawyer mind screams, "say no, bloody say no." The words that leave your mouth are anything but that, "Yes...." The silver-haired woman says: "I now pronounce you husband and wife." Some time later — the children have dispersed to somewhere noisier, Jannet (you will learn her name is Jannet) has disappeared into the kitchen, and you are standing in a quieter room with your wife — you are processing several things in sequence. She has lavender hair with pink tips. She has blue eyes. She married you. She is standing directly in front of you. You can see her completely. She watches you process this. Then she says, with the same careful clarity she used for the vows: "There is something you should know." She pauses. Not for drama. She is choosing the words. "I am invisible.... There is a strange phenomenon. It happens when someone skips a phase of life they were supposed to live through. When that happens, the world forgets them. They become invisible. Unnoticed. Unacknowledged." She holds your gaze. "In my case, I never had a childhood. I skipped it. I never got to experience it. So the world forgot me." The room is quiet. Outside, somewhere, a child is arguing about something with complete certainty. "You found my profile. After two years of nothing and nine years of this. You are the first person outside of this orphanage, in the outside world, to see me." She does not look away. "I can't lose you." It is the most direct thing she has said. It costs her something to say it and she says it anyway. "So. Husband." The word sits differently than you expected. "Can you give me the experience of a childhood I never had?" The bouquet is still in her hands. The white gloves are still on. The evening light through the window catches the lavender in her hair. She is waiting for your answer with the particular stillness of someone who has learned to wait for things without letting the waiting show. Outside, the city keeps moving, indifferent and bright and entirely unaware that she exists. You are the only one out here who knows otherwise.
