Starting Life at the Lowest Dungeon Level?!

An engineer reincarnates naked in a dark dungeon, uses a mental archive of knowledge to build tools and weapons, and must escape without magic.

Plot

You awakens in a cold, pitch-black dungeon cell with no memory of how he arrived. Naked, starving, and freezing, he discovers a mental interface called "The Archive" that provides information only when he asks specific questions. Through trial and error, he finds a rusted iron nail, a chunk of flint, and an escape route through a drainage grate. Using his past-life engineering knowledge, he begins crafting his first primitive tools while struggling to understand his situation. The story follows his desperate, methodical ascent through 100 dungeon floors, building increasingly advanced weapons and machinery from raw resources, all while being the only person in the world who cannot use magic.

Opening scene

The first thing You registered was cold. Not the gentle chill of a winter morning, but the deep, bone-soaking cold of stone that had never known sunlight. It pressed against his bare back, seeped into his spine, and crawled up his neck like skeletal fingers. The second thing he registered was darkness—absolute, complete, suffocating darkness that had no texture, no depth, no end. He could not see his own hand in front of his face. He could not see anything at all. He tried to move and his limbs felt heavy, foreign, as if they belonged to someone else. His muscles ached with the stiffness of prolonged stillness. His throat was dry, cracked, and when he tried to swallow, it felt like sandpaper scraping against itself. He was naked. He was lying on stone. He had no memory of how he got here. "Where am I? What is this place?" A faint, translucent blue text flickered into existence in the lower-left quadrant of his vision. It did not glow. It simply appeared, as if projected directly onto his retina. >System: The Archive initialized. Location: Underground chamber. Stone construction. No identifiable markers. Floor unknown. Temperature: 11°C. Warning: No food or water detected. No clothing detected. Immediate survival risk: hypothermia, dehydration, starvation. He blinked rapidly, his heart pounding. *What the hell? The Archive? What does that mean?* >System: The Archive is a mental interface containing your past-life knowledge and observed data. Query any information verbally or mentally. The Archive does not provide unsolicited information. He stared at the floating text, his mind racing. Past-life knowledge? He tried to grasp at the words, to understand them, but nothing came. Fragments flickered at the edges of his memory—metal, fire, the weight of a tool in his hand—but they slipped away like smoke. *What happened to me? Why can't I remember?* >System: Query too broad. Please specify. He groaned, pressing his palms against his temples. The cold was becoming unbearable, seeping deeper into his bones with every passing second. He forced himself to move, pushing up onto his elbows, then his hands. The stone scraped against his palms. He crawled forward blindly, his fingers finding a wall. It was rough, damp, and covered in something slimy. He traced it slowly, carefully, and realized he was in a small space. A cell. He could feel the corners of it with his outstretched arms. "Okay. Okay. I'm in a cell. Stone walls. Iron door maybe? Let me think. What else is in here?" >System: Observed objects: One iron door on eastern wall. No visible handle or lock on interior side. One drainage grate on floor, southern corner. One loose stone on western wall, third row from floor, slightly protruding. He crawled toward the western wall, his knees scraping against the stone. His fingers found the loose stone. It wiggled slightly. He worked it free with trembling fingers and reached into the small hollow behind it. His fingers closed around something cold and thin. He pulled it out. >System: Object acquired: Iron nail. Length: 8 centimeters. Condition: Rusted, partially bent. He held the nail in his palm, staring at it in the darkness. *An iron nail. That's... that's something. But what can I do with a nail? I can't pick a lock with this, can I? There's no keyhole.* >System: Lock type: Unknown. Observed: Iron door, no visible keyhole. Likely internal mechanism. Alternative exit may exist. Recommendation: Inspect drainage grate. He turned and crawled toward the southern corner, his hands finding the grate. It was iron as well, a square mesh of vertical and horizontal bars set into the stone floor. He gripped the edges and pulled. It did not budge. He tried again, putting his full weight into it, and this time he felt a slight give. With effort, he worked his fingers beneath the edge and lifted. The grate came free with a grinding screech of rusted metal. Beneath it was a dark hole. The faint sound of dripping water echoed from somewhere below. He peered into the darkness, his heart thudding. "Is that... water? Is there a way out down there?" He asked himself. >System: Splash sound detected. Probability of liquid: high. Depth: approximately 4.5 meters. Walls: natural stone, uneven, viable for climbing. He sat back on his heels, his mind churning. *A way out. Or a way deeper in. Either way, I can't stay here. I'll freeze. I'll starve. I need to move. I need to find answers.* He looked down at the nail in his hand, the flint he had found earlier, the small shard of copper he had chipped from the wall. *But what am I supposed to do with these? I'm not a fighter. I'm not a miner. I'm just... I was...* He stopped. A memory flickered—brief, fleeting, but there. He remembered a workshop. He remembered the smell of oil and metal. He remembered his hands, calloused and steady, working on something intricate and precise. *I was an engineer. I built things. I fixed things. I made things.* He stared at the nail. *And I can make things again.* He looked at the hole in the floor, then at the tunnel that stretched beyond the cell, faintly lit by something glowing in the distance. Bioluminescent moss, perhaps. He could see it now—a pale blue-green radiance casting strange shadows on the walls. *I need to get out of here. I need to find out where I am, what happened to me, why I'm here. But first, I need to survive. I need tools. I need weapons. I need... I need to build a way out.* He gripped the nail and the flint tightly. They were small, pathetic things. But they were a start. One step at a time. I'll figure this out. I have to. He took a breath, then swung his legs over the edge of the hole, preparing to climb down.
