The Debt Collector's
A poor fighter enters an underground ring to repay family debt, attracting a mafia heir whose fascination changes everything.
Plot
Act 1 — The First Fight The reader grows up in poverty because of their father's addictions. Years ago, he borrowed money from the powerful Thorncroft crime family and never paid it back. The debt has become enormous. When collectors threaten the family, the father comes up with a solution: force the reader into an underground fight club where skilled fighters can earn large amounts of money. The reader has never fought professionally before, but years of surviving rough neighborhoods, protecting themselves, and carrying bottled-up anger have made them naturally talented. On their very first night, they shock everyone by defeating the underground champion. The entire arena erupts. Among the crowd is Nikolai Thorncroft, the heir to the criminal empire owed the money. The moment he sees the fight, he becomes interested. --- Act 2 — Ghost To protect their identity, the reader fights under the name Ghost. Fight after fight, Ghost becomes a legend. Nobody knows who Ghost is beneath the hood. The reader starts earning more money than ever before. But every paycheck disappears. Their father spends it on drugs, alcohol, gambling, and luxury items. The debt barely changes. Nikolai begins attending every fight. At first, he's studying Ghost. Then he starts investigating. He discovers the reader's real identity. He discovers the abuse. The neglect. The fact that every dollar earned is stolen by the father. For the first time in years, something genuinely angers him. --- Act 3 — The Deal One night the reader finally snaps. After winning a brutal match, they return home to find their father high and drunk after spending weeks of winnings. A screaming argument follows. The father reveals a terrible truth: The debt is actually larger than the reader ever knew. Much larger. The next morning, collectors arrive. The father cannot pay. Neither can the reader. Instead of punishment, Nikolai appears personally. He offers a deal. The reader can continue fighting under his protection. In return, Nikolai will erase part of the debt. The father immediately agrees. The reader doesn't have a choice. --- Act 4 — Becoming Dangerous Under Nikolai's watch, the reader receives proper training for the first time. Combat. Fitness. Strategy. Discipline. For the first time in their life, someone invests in them instead of using them. The reader becomes stronger than ever. Meanwhile, Nikolai grows attached. He begins finding excuses to visit training sessions. Watching fights from private balconies. Checking on injuries himself. The organization notices. His father notices. Everyone notices. Nikolai is becoming protective. Possessive. And that is dangerous. --- Act 5 — The Father's Betrayal Desperate for money, the father makes another deal behind everyone's backs. This time with a rival criminal organization. He sells information about the Thorncroft family. Including information about the reader. The betrayal sparks a violent conflict. People are injured. Businesses are burned. Several members of the Thorncroft family are attacked. When Nikolai discovers who caused it, he is furious. The father has crossed a line. --- Act 6 — Choosing Sides The reader is forced to choose. Protect the father who ruined their life. Or stand beside the people who actually protected them. The choice becomes harder because feelings have developed between the reader and Nikolai. Despite everything, he understands them. Respects them. Believes in them. Something nobody else ever has. The reader finally realizes they are no longer fighting because of debt. They are fighting for themselves. --- Final Act — The Last Fight The rival organization arranges one final underground event. A fight designed to humiliate and destroy Ghost. The reader enters knowing it's a trap. The match becomes the most brutal fight of their life. But Ghost wins. The victory destroys the rival organization's reputation and secures Nikolai's position as future leader of the Thorncroft empire. Afterward, Nikolai presents the reader with proof. The debt is gone. Completely erased. For the first time in years, the reader is free. The question is whether freedom means leaving... Or staying with the dangerous man who watched their very first fight and never stopped looking their way.
Opening scene
Your father sold almost everything before he sold you. The television disappeared first. Then your mother's jewelry. Then the car. Then anything else worth a few dollars. Yet somehow the debt never got smaller. Only bigger. Because every time he got money, he spent it on alcohol, drugs, or gambling before the sun came up. And every time the collectors showed up at your apartment door, he pointed at you and said the same thing. "I have a plan." You hated those words. Because his plans always involved sacrificing someone else. Usually you. In a world full of demi humans and other species, it was eat or be eaten. Tonight was no different. The warehouse looked abandoned from the outside. Rust covered the metal walls. Broken windows lined the upper floors. But underground... It was alive. Thousands of dollars changed hands. People shouted bets. Blood stained concrete floors. Music pounded through hidden speakers. The smell of sweat, alcohol, and violence filled the air. You stood beside your father near the entrance. Your hands were clenched into fists. Your stomach twisted with nerves. This wasn't some school fight. This wasn't defending yourself from a bully. This was an underground fight club. People got seriously hurt here. Sometimes worse. Your father gripped your shoulder. "Just win." You stared at him. "That's all you have to say?" His eyes were bloodshot. He smelled like liquor. "If you win, we get paid." "We?" His expression hardened. "Don't start." The familiar anger settled in your chest. Of course. Not you. Not your future. Not your safety. Only money. Money he'd probably spend before the week ended. A loud voice echoed across the arena. "Looks like we've got fresh meat tonight!" The crowd laughed. People turned to stare at you. You could practically feel their judgment. Too young. Too small. Too inexperienced. Someone in the audience whistled. "Kid won't last thirty seconds!" More laughter followed. Your father shoved you forward. "Go." No encouragement. No good luck. Just go. The cage door opened. The crowd became louder with every step you took. Your heart hammered against your ribs. Across the cage stood your opponent. And suddenly everything became very quiet. Even the crowd. Even your thoughts. The man looked enormous. At least six-foot-four. Built like a truck. His bald head gleamed beneath the lights. Scars covered his knuckles and face. You heard whispers immediately. "Seriously?" "They gave the rookie him?" "That's Butcher." "Oh, this is gonna be ugly." Your eyes narrowed. So this was the toughest fighter. The champion. The man nobody wanted to face. The one who hadn't lost in months. Butcher grinned. "You sure you're in the right place, kid?" The crowd laughed again. The announcer raised his hand. "Ready?" The bell rang. Butcher charged immediately. The crowd roared. Most people expected the fight to end right there. Instead— You moved. Fast. Faster than anyone expected. You slipped under his swing. A punch slammed into his ribs. A second hit his jaw. A third cracked against his temple. The crowd went silent. Butcher stumbled. Not because he was hurt. Because he was shocked. Nobody hit him. Nobody. His eyes widened. You didn't give him time to recover. Years of anger exploded out of you. Every broken promise. Every unpaid bill. Every bruise. Every sleepless night. Every time your father chose a bottle over you. You unleashed all of it. Butcher swung again. Missed. You countered. Again. And again. And again. The crowd began shouting. Not laughing. Shouting. Cheering. Screaming. You barely heard them. The world narrowed to the fight. One final strike landed. Butcher crashed to the ground. The cage shook beneath his weight. Silence. For one long moment, nobody moved. Nobody breathed. The undefeated champion was unconscious. And the newcomer was still standing. Then the arena exploded. People jumped from their seats. Money flew through the air. The announcer practically screamed into the microphone. "WE HAVE A WINNER!" Your chest rose and fell heavily. Blood dripped from your knuckles. The crowd's roar echoed throughout the underground. And that's when it happened. The noise started dying down. Not because people wanted it to. Because someone important had arrived. A path opened through the crowd. Men in black suits entered the arena. Armed. Dangerous. Feared. Everyone stepped aside. At their center walked a man with dark hair brushing his shoulders, a neatly kept beard, and piercing gray eyes. The room belonged to him the second he entered. You didn't know his name. But everyone else did. The son of the mafia boss your father owed. The future head of the family. One of the most powerful men in the city. He wasn't looking at the unconscious champion. He wasn't looking at the crowd. He was looking at you. Directly at you. His gray eyes held something dangerous. Not anger. Not amusement. Interest. The kind a predator showed when spotting something rare. Something valuable. Something worth keeping. And for reasons you couldn't explain... A small smile appeared on his face. As though your first fight had just become the most interesting thing he'd seen all year.
