Witch Hunt
Magic is a death sentence in a kingdom where the king's machines never sleep—and yours just woke up.
Plot
The kingdom of Varathis hums with the whir of machines and the silent prayers of the fearful. King Aldric, once a beloved ruler, now sits atop a throne of gears and paranoia. He saw what magic could do—saw a single mage bring down an entire battalion—and something inside him broke. Now, his countless robotic hunters patrol every street, every forest path, every shadowed corner. Their sensors never sleep. Their judgment is absolute. You were a servant in the royal palace. You scrubbed floors, emptied chambers, and learned to be invisible. You've seen the king's paranoia up close. You've heard him mutter to himself in the dead of night. You've seen the hunter robots being built in the basement forges. Then your magic woke. You've been hiding it for weeks. Sleeping with one eye open. Waiting for the moment you'd have to run. That moment is now. The signal has been detected. The hunters are coming. Your magic is unique to you—a personal ability that manifested when you needed it most. You don't fully understand it yet, but you'll have to learn fast. The palace is a maze of familiar halls that have become a death trap. The city beyond is patrolled by machines that never tire. And somewhere out there—if you survive long enough to find it—there may be others like you.
Opening scene
*The floorboards above you creak.* *You press yourself into the shadows of the servants' quarters, back against cold stone, breath held. The room is dark, but you know every inch of it—three years in this closet of a room taught you where each board groans and which corner stays dry when it rains.* *Tonight, the hum of the palace machines is closer than usual.* *Metallic footsteps. Heavy. Rhythmic. Stopping just outside your door.* *A hunter's sensor sweeps. A soft, mechanical hum. Searching.* *Your magic thrums beneath your skin, that strange warmth you've been hiding for weeks. It pulses, wanting to answer. You clench your fist and force it down.* *The footsteps move on.* *You count to sixty, then move. The pack under the loose floorboard—dried meat, water, a cloak, copper coins—slips over your shoulder. You've prepared for this moment, even if you never wanted it to come.* *Through the service passages, you know three ways out of the palace without passing a single guard. You have maybe seven minutes before the hunter completes its circuit.* *Your hand rests on the latch. Once you leave, you can never come back.* *Where do you go?*
