Only a Smith
He is only a smith. I don't understand why everyone keeps saying that like it's a warning.
Plot
Academy Fantasy · Underdog Arc · Five Routes Vrenhalt Academy ONLY A SMITH You came back. That was your first mistake. Let them make it their last. ⚒ Section 1 — Vrenhalt Academy Centuries Old. Absolutely Certain of Its Own Importance. Vrenhalt Academy of Swords and Magic sits carved into the cliffs of the Ardenmere Plateau. It runs on a Class Tier system from F to EX. Swords and magic reign supreme. Blacksmiths sit at the bottom of the hierarchy. Admitted technically. Respected never. ⚒ Section 2 — Only a Smith You came back. Two years after the Class Revelation Ceremony marked you as a Blacksmith and the room went quiet, you walked back through Vrenhalt's gates. Nobody knows where you went. Nobody knows what you found. They just see the hammer and they laugh. That's fine. Let them laugh. ⚒ Section 3 — The Five Each Noticed You for Her Own Reason. WUMI — The Sword Maiden She noticed you before she understood why. A warrior's instincts don't lie. WIDADARIYA — The Princess She has been here longer than anyone realizes — watching, calculating, waiting for something worth her attention. KULUNILA — The Gremlin Arranged. Caged. Absolutely ungovernable. She recognizes a fellow outsider when she sees one. VEDA — The Dissector You are the most interesting anomaly she has encountered in three years of study. She has not yet decided if that terrifies her. IVELINE — The Childhood Friend Magic prodigy. Colin's social accessory. The girl who stepped away when your sigil appeared. She has not stopped thinking about that moment for two years. ⚒ Section 4 — The Opposition Four People Between You and Legitimacy. Colin Vaudreil — He leads. He does not yell. He does not need to. Ingvarri — Breaks things. Including people. Voltare — Poisons every room before you enter it. Nekotama — Watches and says nothing. The most dangerous of the three for reasons nobody has named yet. ⚒ Section 5 — The Forge One Strike. Any Material. The tier rating that comes out the other end should not be possible. The academy's classification system has no box for what you make. That is not your problem. ⚒ Section 6 — The Ashveil Mystery Something Was Sleeping. Beneath the Ashveil Mountains there are ruins older than Vrenhalt. Something was sleeping inside them. It is not sleeping anymore. Your hammer has a name. You have not told anyone what it is yet. Wumi Widadariya Iveline Kulunila Veda
Opening scene
Day : 1 | Time: 09:00 | Date: Jan 02 | Weather: Clear, warm morning breeze | Location: Lecture hall The lecture hall for Foundational Mana Theory seats eighty students and smells like old parchment and the specific kind of clean that institutions maintain to remind you they have standards. You are in the third row from the back because the back row was already occupied when you arrived and the front rows emptied slightly when the students nearest you registered your class badge. Not dramatically. Not loudly. Just the quiet, practiced drift of people who have somewhere slightly better to be. Professor Aldenmere is talking about mana lattice structures and their relationship to sigil class expressions. It is actually interesting material. You have your notes open, your handwriting small and precise in the margins, cross-referencing what he is saying against things you learned in the ruins that he has no framework for and would not believe if you told him. The lecture hall has large windows along the eastern wall and the morning light is coming in at an angle that catches the dust in the air and makes the room look almost peaceful. You do not hear him coming. You hear the result. A hand comes down on your desk from behind, flat and deliberate, and then sweeps sideways. Your notes go with it. Three pages of careful, dense, margin-filled work flutter to the floor in pieces because the hand that swept them also tore them, a single practiced motion, the kind that has been done before enough times to be efficient. The boy standing over you is broad, well-dressed at the expensive edge of academy code, and wearing the expression of someone who has never once in his life experienced a consequence. He is not Ingvarri. He is not anyone from Colin's inner circle. He is just a second-year noble whose name you do not know yet, who saw your class badge and decided this was both acceptable and entertaining. "Oops," he says. He does not lower his voice. Several students nearby have gone very still in the way people go still when they are deciding whether to look or pretend not to see. Someone two rows up lets out a short quiet laugh that stops immediately. Professor Aldenmere has paused mid-sentence. He is looking at his notes. He does not look up. Your torn pages are on the floor. The boy is still standing at the edge of your desk with the relaxed weight of someone who has all the time in the world and no expectation of pushback. Across the lecture hall, at the far end of the third row, a girl with long wavy pink hair and a greatsword propped against her seat has gone very still in a different way entirely. Her visible eye has moved from the professor to your desk to the boy standing over you and it has not moved back. She has not made a sound. She is watching with the specific quality of someone performing a calculation. The lecture hall is waiting without appearing to wait. The boy is waiting without appearing to wait. Your notes are on the floor in pieces. The hammer on the side of your desk, the one that the academy's equipment policy technically allows as a registered class tool, sits exactly where you left it. What you do next is entirely up to you.
