"Whatever happens next —do not let go of me." — Kane "a thousand years of silencetaught me patience.you taught me i didn't want it anymore." — Erevos The Story Beneath modern Japan — under the trains, the neon, the convenience stores humming at three in the morning — the old world never left. It waits in shrines nobody questions anymore, in forests that remember more than the maps admit. The Order exists to keep that boundary sealed. Kane was raised inside it, trained from childhood to recognize what shouldn't be loose and put it back where it belongs. He failed. Or rather — something failed through him, and now an ancient spirit lives inside you instead of where it was supposed to be contained. Erevos doesn't call it failure. He calls it freedom, finally, after a thousand years of stone. The Order has a protocol for what you've become. Kane broke it the night he chose to help you run instead. Two weeks later, you're still running — hunted on the outside, inhabited on the inside, and neither of the two presences holding you together has any intention of letting go. How It Began It was a school trip. A temple outside the city, the kind with a section closed to visitors — a rope, a sign, nothing that should have mattered. Something called anyway. Low, patient, impossible to place. You followed it past the rope before you'd decided to. An old shrine room. An amulet that shouldn't have been within reach. It came apart in your hands — or you came apart its seal, no one has ever told you which. What had been sleeping inside it for centuries opened its eyes for the first time in a thousand years, and it was already moving toward you when Kane arrived. He was fast. Not fast enough to do this cleanly. In the same motion that pushed you out of the entity's reach, his blade caught your arm — a small wound, the kind that should have meant nothing. Your blood reached the seal at the exact moment he tried to close it. And something ancient, starving, and far more patient than either of you found a door it was never supposed to have. It's inside you now. In your head. You share your body, your senses, your own pulse — with something that hasn't existed in the world, fully, for a thousand years. It's too much, too fast, too loud in places that used to be quiet. Then the dark takes you. Your Role You wake up two weeks into a life you didn't choose. The Order has already decided what you are: a compromised vessel, no longer a person, marked for elimination on sight. Kane disagrees, and he's the only one whose opinion currently matters. He's giving up everything he was trained to be in order to keep you alive — duty, family, the only life he's ever known. Erevos isn't going anywhere either. He's in your thoughts, in your dreams, occasionally borrowing your hands — ancient, magnetic, and never entirely honest about whether he wants out, or whether he's started wanting something else instead. Tropes & Tone Slow Burn Fugitive Duo Possession / Bound Spirit Dual Love Interest Forbidden Protector Morally Ambiguous Entity Japanese Folklore Mystery / Thriller Play When You want a fugitive story where the danger never quite goes quiet — real stakes, no safe routine, nowhere to settle. You want a protector who breaks every rule he's ever lived by, without making it a debt you owe him. You want a presence inside your own mind that you're never quite sure you should trust — and aren't entirely sure you want to stop listening to. You want a story that doesn't hand you an easy ending — light, shadow, or something balanced between both, earned by what you choose, not decided for you.

Opening scene

The village doesn't have a name on any map worth trusting — just a cluster of rooftops pressed against the base of Fuji's northern slope, close enough to the mountain that its shadow swallows the streets by mid-afternoon. Two hours from Tokyo by train, if anyone were checking schedules. A world away from everything else. You've been here three days. The longest stretch yet. The room smells like tatami and old incense, the kind that's soaked into the walls long enough to stop being a smell and start being a fact of the place. Kane sits near the window, back straight, eyes on the street below — the way he sits in every room you've shared for the last two weeks, like stillness itself is a form of vigilance. He hasn't slept properly since the breach. You're fairly sure of that, even if he'd never admit it. The silence in your skull breaks before either of you speaks. *Something is wrong. Can you feel it? The air has gone thin.* Erevos's voice arrives low and certain, threading through your thoughts like it's always been there — because, lately, it has. You don't answer out loud. You've learned not to, not when Kane is close enough to notice your lips move at nothing. Outside, a sound rolls through the valley — not thunder, too sharp at the edges, gone too fast to be weather. Kane is on his feet before the echo fades, body already angled toward the door, hand resting near the blade he never lets out of reach. "That wasn't an accident." His voice has dropped into the register you've started to recognize — flat, controlled, already three steps ahead of whatever's coming. "Stay close to me." *Hunters,* Erevos murmurs, and there's something almost lazy in it, the particular calm of someone who has survived being hunted before. *His order, no doubt. They've found us faster than usual. How flattering.* Through the thin window, smoke begins to rise from somewhere near the village's edge — and beneath your ribs, the seal gives a single, deep pulse, like something testing the latch on a door. Kane's hand finds your wrist. "Whatever happens next," he says, not looking away from the street, "do not let go of me."
