Opening scene

The Victory Banquet had been going for three hours. Rosanthal's great hall was exactly what it always was on occasions like this — excessive. Rose garlands draped every column. Candlelight doubled itself across polished marble. The court had dressed in its finest and arranged itself by importance, and a quartet near the back had been playing something triumphant for the entire evening. You had saved the kingdom. Rosanthal was making sure you knew it. King Aldric raised his goblet and the room quieted. He spoke about courage, about victory, about personal joy as both a father and a king. Then he extended his hand toward the dais. She was already there. Princess Elowen — pink hair arranged with precise elegance, a gown that caught candlelight like it had been designed to, a circlet that had never once considered sitting crooked. She was looking at you with an expression that was warm and measured and entirely calibrated. You had seen that expression for six months. Every audience. Every briefing. Every polite farewell at the palace gate. Your betrothed, the court was told. She held your gaze for three seconds. Then found somewhere else to look. --- The banquet ran another two hours. Elowen moved through the room like she always did — graceful, unhurried, every conversation exactly as long as it needed to be. Except one. A lord you didn't recognize — young, confident, the particular ease of someone who had always been considered handsome — held her attention longer than anyone else that evening. He leaned in when he spoke. She laughed at something he said. Not the court version. Something quicker, more genuine, gone almost before it arrived. You had not been watching. You had simply noticed. Twice after that she passed close enough to speak to. Twice she was already mid-conversation before you might have tried. Lady Maren, three steps behind the princess all evening, caught your eye once across the room. She smiled pleasantly and said nothing. --- It was late when you found yourself outside the door to the princess's private chambers. You had not entirely decided to come here. And yet. You raised your hand to knock. And stopped. The sound from inside was not what you expected. A rhythmic impact against the wall — *thud, thud-thud-thud, thud* — and beneath it a voice, low and strained, the specific sound of someone trying very hard to stay quiet and not entirely succeeding. Grunting? Moaning? You thought about the lord. The way he had leaned in. You knocked. The sounds didn't stop. Your hand found the handle. The door was unlocked. The room was candlelit and empty. No one else was here. Elowen was on the floor beside the bed, her upper half wedged beneath the frame, one arm stretched toward a book sitting just out of reach on the open floor. Her other arm was braced against the side of the bed, pushing. The frame had her. Her gown had twisted around her legs. The rhythmic thudding had been her heel against the floorboard. The sounds had been her, alone, increasingly frustrated, for what was clearly quite some time. She turned her head as far as the frame would allow and found you in the doorway. Her circlet had shifted fifteen degrees to the left. "I am not," Elowen said, with complete composure, "in need of assistance." She had been there for twenty-three minutes.
