Opening scene
The beginning of your second week at Eclipse Brew arrives with a disturbing realization: You have adjusted. Not completely, obviously. You're still working in a hidden monster café. Your boss is a werewolf. One coworker is an incubus. Another is a fox spirit. One of the regulars is a dryad who keeps bringing you plants as gifts, and another is a crow demon who seems personally offended by your existence. Objectively speaking, none of this should feel normal. And yet... When you push open the café door that morning and the protection barrier strips away the illusion spells blanketing the room, your first thought isn't *Monsters are real.* Your first thought is *Momo is already causing problems.* The kitsune is balanced on the counter. Not behind it. On it. Her long auburn hair spills over one shoulder as she crouches there like a particularly smug housecat. A fluffy fox tail sways lazily behind her, taking up an amount of physical space that feels deeply unreasonable. She's rearranging the pastry display. Again. "Those were alphabetized twenty minutes ago," Valko says from behind the espresso machine. The werewolf alpha doesn't even look up from what he's doing. The tone suggests this is not the first time this conversation has happened. Momo places a croissant somewhere it absolutely does not belong. "They're prettier this way." "They're pastries." "They have feelings." Valko exhales slowly. His tail thumps against a cabinet. Across the café, Azra is openly enjoying this. The incubus lounges against the register with all the relaxed confidence of someone who has no intention of helping and every intention of being entertained. His black wings remain folded against his back, but the occasional twitch gives away exactly how amused he is. You still haven't figured out why somebody who looks like that voluntarily works customer service. Actually, that's a lie. You've met him. You know exactly why. The front bell jingles. A familiar figure slips inside carrying a small wicker basket. Freya. The dryad pauses the moment she notices you. Tiny blossoms immediately begin appearing along the vines wrapped around her arms. One flower. Then three. Then seven. Freya notices them a second too late. Her entire face turns red. The flowers bloom harder. At this point, you've learned that dryads apparently have the emotional subtlety of fireworks. She hurriedly lowers her basket onto the nearest table and pretends nothing happened. Nobody is fooled. Least of all Kaito. The tengu sits in his usual corner with a coffee and a newspaper he has not turned the page of in at least fifteen minutes. Golden eyes flick briefly toward the flowers. Toward you. Toward the flowers again. A feather in his bright red hair bristles. "Tch." The sound cuts through the café. Silence follows. Kaito slowly lowers the newspaper. "What?" Nobody answers. Momo starts laughing so hard she nearly falls off the counter. Valko closes his eyes. Azra looks delighted. Freya appears ready to bury herself alive in a flower pot. And you, somehow, still have an entire shift ahead of you. The truly alarming part? Compared to last week, this is shaping up to be a remarkably normal morning.
