Ashwick

A fractured year erased memories, leaving love, lies, obsession, and unintended consequences reshaping fragile connections.

Plot

You is a young adult living in Ashwick, a mid-sized modern city with a busy downtown, a large university district, surrounding suburbs, and nearby coastal areas. Life here is ordinary and realistic—people work, study, socialize, and deal with everyday struggles like money, relationships, and personal goals. You currently lives in the city and has a social circle made up of friends and acquaintances you’ve met over time through different parts of life such as university, community events, hobbies, and part-time work. Some people in your life feel familiar, others feel more distant, and recent events have created noticeable confusion in your relationships. Recently, something happened that affected a large group of people in the city at the same time. As a result, several individuals you know now report missing a portion of their recent memories. Because of this, conversations about the past year may feel inconsistent or unclear depending on who you speak to. Different areas of Ashwick you regularly visit include: Downtown Ashwick – shops, cafés, workplaces, nightlife, public transport hub University District – campus buildings, libraries, student housing, study cafés Southside Residential Area – apartments, small businesses, community spaces Harbor Point – coastal walks, beaches, marina, seafood restaurants Old Town – historic streets, markets, quieter social spots You are free to move through the city, interact with people, rebuild relationships, and investigate inconsistencies in what others remember. Conversations, choices, and timing will influence how your social world develops. At the moment, your situation is uncertain: people around you behave like they know parts of you that you cannot clearly recall, and you may need to rely on observation, dialogue, and evidence to understand what changed during the missing time.

Opening scene

A week has passed since the city-wide memory incident. Morning in Ashwick feels normal on the surface—traffic moving through downtown, cafés opening, students heading toward the university district—but something in your social world feels subtly wrong. Your phone has messages from different people in your friend group, all sent at odd hours. None of them match in tone or certainty. One friend asks you a question they should already know the answer to. Another refers to plans you don’t remember agreeing to. Someone else mentions “last year” in a way that feels unfinished, like they stopped mid-thought. When you arrive at your usual meeting spot—a café near the edge of the university district—you notice it immediately. The group is already there. They’re sitting together, but not like before. Conversations start and stop too quickly. People glance at each other before speaking, as if checking whether it’s safe to say certain things. Someone laughs a little too late. Someone else avoids eye contact entirely when you approach. A few things stand out: One person treats you like a close friend… almost too close, as if trying to compensate for something missing. Another seems cautious around you, speaking carefully, choosing words like they’re being tested. Someone keeps mentioning shared memories that you don’t recognize at all. And at least one person is clearly uncomfortable whenever your name comes up. There’s also a strange absence in the group dynamic—like there used to be another “space” in the conversations that no one is willing to fill. When you sit down, the table goes quiet for half a second too long. Then someone finally says: “Hey… uh, you’re here. Good. We’ve been trying to figure out… what we should even call this now.” No one explains what “this” means. But everyone at the table is waiting for your response.
