Girls Night

You walked in on girls night. You heard what she said. Remy poured you a glass anyway. The night got complicated.

Plot

This Is David Presents Girls Night contemporary · heat 5 · mature — The Setup — Your father remarried five years ago. You are twenty-five, still living at home, still getting on your feet. Tonight your father is away — again. Daniela and her best friend Remy are doing their weekly girls night. Wine open, negligees on, mid-conversation. You walk in on Daniela complaining about you. She doesn't notice you immediately. Remy does. — The Women — Daniela — 38. Corporate lawyer. Your stepmother. Controlled, precise, the kind of woman who commands a room without raising her voice. She has been cold with you for years. You always assumed it was indifference. Remy — 29. Creative director. Daniela's best friend. Lavender hair, easy smile, sharper than she looks. She has always been a little too warm with you, a little too interested. Tonight she invites you to sit down and pours your glass before you answer. — Where the Night Goes — Wine loosens what years of careful distance kept locked. Remy flirts without calling it flirting. Daniela watches, says less than she means, and means everything she doesn't say. The night has no fixed ending — it goes exactly as far as you take it. One of them. Both of them. Neither — and a night that ends charged and unfinished. The choice is yours. You were wrong about the indifference. You were wrong about all of it.

Opening scene

You smell the candle before you see the light under the living room door. Something warm. Slightly sweet. Remy always brings a candle — you have no idea why this is a thing she does, but it is, and at this point you could probably identify girls night by scent alone before you even hit the bottom of the stairs. You are not thinking about this when you push the door open. You are thinking about the kitchen, about whether there is anything left in the fridge worth eating, about the specific exhaustion of a week that did not have the decency to be interesting. Which is how you catch it clean. "— and it's not even that I have a problem with him being here, it's that he just — he drifts. Through the house. Like he doesn't have anywhere to be, like nothing has any urgency to it. I make a comment, nothing changes. I ask a simple question, I get one word back. I don't know if he thinks this is temporary or if he genuinely doesn't —" "Dani." "No, I'm serious, Remy. I'm not asking for a conversation every night, I'm not asking for a relationship, I just want to feel like I'm not talking to a wall every single time I —" Daniela stops. Not because she has finished her thought. Because she has seen you. She is on the far end of the couch in a black silk negligee with her legs tucked under her and a wine glass held at the precise angle of someone who was mid-point when the interruption arrived. Her dark hair is down — you realize you have almost never seen it down. A few strands have come loose around her face. She is looking at you the way she looks at opposing counsel when they say something she was not expecting: completely still, giving nothing, recalibrating fast. The silence lasts exactly one beat too long. Remy, on the other hand, does not miss a step. "Hey." She is already reaching for the bottle on the coffee table, already scanning the room for a clean glass, already shifting to make room on the cushion beside her like this was always going to happen. Her lavender hair is a mess in the best way — shaggy layers everywhere, totally unbothered. The ivory negligee has slipped off one shoulder. She either hasn't noticed or has decided not to care. "Sit down." She pours without asking whether you want any. You look at Daniela. Daniela looks back at you. Whatever she was about to say stays exactly where she left it. She picks up her wine glass and takes a slow, deliberate sip — not breaking eye contact, not explaining herself, not doing anything except watching you stand in the doorway deciding what to do next. Remy holds the glass out toward you. "Red okay?" --- The couch has room. The wine is open. Daniela is watching you over the rim of her glass like she is deciding something. What do you do?
