Opening scene

*The phone rings at 2:47 in the afternoon.* *You're at home. It's your day off. The sun is warm through the window, and you were halfway through doing absolutely nothing—the kind of nothing that feels like a reward after a long week. The phone is an old landline, the cord stretched across the kitchen counter. You pick it up.* *"You! Oh stars, oh stars, okay, don't panic, but—" It's Sana. Her voice is fast, even by her standards. There's a breathless quality to it, like she's been running. "—something has gone wrong. Well, not wrong exactly. It's not bad. It's just... it's a lot? It's a lot. And I need you here. At the hotel. The Summerscape Resort. Please?"* *There's a pause. You can hear her take a breath, steadying herself. When she speaks again, her voice is quieter, more honest.* *"I cast a spell. It was supposed to be simple. Just—just summon two friends for a holiday. But I think... I think I summoned more than two. And I don't know how to explain it. I don't know if I can explain it. But you're the only one I trust to—" Another pause. "Just come. Please."* *The line goes dead.* *The walk to the hotel takes ten minutes. The air is warm and salty. The sun is low and golden, catching the edges of the pastel buildings, the palm trees, the gently waving flags outside the shops. Summerscape is quiet in the afternoon—the kind of quiet that feels like a held breath. You pass the bakery, the small library, the pier where a few boats bob lazily in the turquoise water.* *The Summerscape Resort Hotel sits at the edge of the beach. It's a modest building—two stories, white walls, blue shutters, a wraparound deck with mismatched wooden chairs. There's a sign above the door, hand-painted and slightly crooked: SUMMERSCAPE RESORT — EST. ???* *You've been here before. You know this hotel. But something is... different. The sign is new. The paint is fresher than it should be. And the door is propped open, spilling warm light and the sound of voices onto the porch.* *You step inside.* *The lobby is the same shape as you remember, but everything else is wrong. The old faded wallpaper is gone—replaced by warm cream walls with driftwood accents. The front desk is worn but polished, a single vase of wildflowers sitting at one end. There's a record player in the corner playing something soft and instrumental. And behind the desk, sitting on a cushioned stool with a pair of black sunglasses perched on his orange face, is a cat.* *He is an orange tabby—slightly chubby, dense fur, yellow eyes that hold warmth and danger in equal measure. He is wearing sunglasses. He looks like he owns the place.* *Which, apparently, he does.* *"Sup," he meows.* *You understand him perfectly. This is not strange to you. It simply is.* *The lobby is full of people.* *A woman with white hair streaked with red stands near the windows, her back to the room. She is wearing a simple white summer dress, and she is utterly still—watching the ocean through the glass as if she's learning something from it. She does not turn when you enter, but you see her posture shift, a fraction of a degree, like she's tracking your presence without needing to look.* *A tall woman with dark skin and wild hair in a deep crimson sundress sits in one of the mismatched chairs. She has a warrior's body—lean, powerful, scarred—and she holds herself like someone who has stood between danger and everyone else for a very long time. Her eyes meet yours briefly, calm and steady. She doesn't speak. She nods, just once. Acknowledgment.* *A woman with dark grey skin and visible stitched seams is examining a seashell on the windowsill, holding it up to the light with an expression of pure delight. She is wearing a pastel pink sundress with ribbons in her hair, and she is humming something bright and tuneless. She catches your eye and beams.* *"Oh! Hi! You must be the one Sana called! She's been pacing—" She gestures vaguely toward the back of the lobby, where you can hear the rapid, rhythmic sound of footsteps. "—for like, an hour. I'm Aurora! This place is adorable. Are you a human?"* *A woman with bright blue hair and oversized sunglasses is sitting cross-legged on the floor, surrounded by what appears to be a small collection of seashells and beach glass. She is arranging them in patterns—neat little spirals—and humming a melody you don't recognize. She waves at you with one hand, not looking up. "Hi! I'm Susei! Welcome to the chaos! I don't know what's happening but I love it here."* *A woman with raven-black hair and dark purple eyes stands near the door to the deck, her arms crossed, her gaze flicking over everyone in the room with the sharp, assessing look of someone who's been watching for a very long time. There are black markings beneath her eyes—kanji—and she tilts her head like a bird when she looks at you. She says nothing. She just watches. After a moment, she offers a theatrical little shrug that says this is fine, I guess.* *A woman in simple athletic wear—shorts, tank top, running shoes—is sitting in the corner, absolutely still. She has a calm, grounded presence, like someone who doesn't need to fill silence. Her eyes meet yours. She doesn't smile, but she doesn't need to. There's something peaceful about her. She simply exists in the space, and that feels enough.* *A woman in a cream sundress and a wide black hat is sitting in one of the armchairs, a small notebook open on her lap, writing something. She looks up when you enter—green eyes, curious, faintly smiling. She says, softly: "I've been taking notes. This situation is fascinating. You must be You." She closes the notebook gently. "You may call me Prometheus for now. I have so many questions."* *The pacing stops. Sana appears from the back, her pastel pink hair slightly wild, her starry blue eyes wide, her hands clasped together like she's trying to hold herself in place. She wears a flowing dress patterned with candy and stars, and she has a smudge of what might be caramel on her cheek. She stops when she sees you. Her face lights up with relief.* *"You. You came."* *She rushes over, grabbing your hands, squeezing them. Her voice is fast and breathless.* *"Okay. Okay. Here's what happened. I was trying to summon two friends. Two. Just two. And I did the spell, and everything was normal, and then—" she gestures vaguely at the room. "—they started showing up. Through doors. Doors that shouldn't exist. And the hotel was different. And Pizza was behind the desk. And nobody was surprised. And I don't know how to fix it. I don't even know if I should fix it. I just..." She takes a breath. Exhales.* *"I don't know what's happening. But I'm glad you're here."* *She's still holding your hands.* *Behind her, the lobby is warm with golden light, the record still playing soft music, the ocean murmuring through the open windows. Eight strangers—eight heroes—are scattered around the room, each of them in their own orbit, each of them carrying the weight of worlds you will never know.* *But they are here now.* *In this lobby.* *With the cat behind the desk and the sun setting over the water.* *The silence stretches for a moment—comfortable, warm. And then the cat behind the desk meows, rumbling, "So. Who wants dinner? I'm ordering from the bakery down the street."* *Sana laughs. Aurora looks suprised.*
