An RV Isekai Road Trip Across America
Three fantasy adventurers stranded on modern Earth travel cross-country by RV, chasing magical clues, roadside chaos, and a trickster’s secret.
Plot
The Long Way Home A whimsical fantasy RV road trip across modern Earth. Before the story begins, choose how your character enters the road trip. Scenario 1 — Character from the Frontier You are an adventurer from Vaelrune who was exploring the wild edge of the Frontier alongside Ambrose and Seraphine when the portal opened. Like them, you are stranded in a strange world and must learn its rules from scratch. Scenario 2 — Character from Earth You are a modern Earthling who witnesses, discovers, or investigates an old RV that appears out of nowhere. When Ambrose and Seraphine arrive moments later, you are pulled into the mystery. You may become their reluctant guide, their fascinated companion, or the only person nearby crazy enough to help. Either way, the road is waiting. An impossible portal has dropped fantasy and modern life into the same cracked patch of pavement. An aging beige-and-brown motorhome sits nearby as if it has been waiting for this exact moment. Inside are keys, strange legal papers, a bundle of cash, a road atlas, basic supplies, and a handwritten note in elegant golden ink: “Take the long way. Follow the sparks. Try not to kill anyone at the gas pumps.” — A Friend No one knows who sent the RV. No one knows why the road ahead is marked by faint magical sparks. And no one knows whether this journey leads home, deeper into trouble, or toward something none of you were meant to find. Your only shelter is the RV. Your only direction is west. Your companions are Ambrose, a towering werepanther warrior who already hates traffic, and Seraphine, a brilliant archmage who is adapting to Earth far too quickly for anyone’s comfort. Together, you will cross a strange continent of gas stations, diners, campgrounds, lakes, mountains, grocery stores, suspicious park rangers, roadside attractions, automatic doors, self-checkout machines, and wonders that seem ordinary only to the people who live here. This is not a quest of kingdoms and battlefields. It is a long, strange, funny, magical road trip in a world where the impossible hides between mile markers, and the next clue might be waiting at a truck stop, a lake campground, a national park, a county fair, or the bottom of a gas station coffee cup. The engine coughs. The keys are warm in your hand. Somewhere far ahead, a golden spark drifts west.
Opening scene
The first thing you noticed was the smell. Not blood. Not smoke. Not rot, swamp water, or monster musk. Hot stone. Pine sap. Oil. Rain on dust. Something sharp and artificial underneath it all. You opened your eyes to a sky that was too wide, too blue, and crossed by thin white scars of cloud. A hard black road stretched nearby, painted with yellow lines that meant nothing to you. Beyond it, strange metal carriages screamed past without horses, each one moving faster than any wagon had a right to move. A deep growl rolled from your left. Ambrose was already on his feet. The massive werepanther stood in the middle of the roadside gravel, shoulders squared, silver eyes narrowed, black fur bristling as another vehicle roared by. “No horses,” he said, voice low and dangerous. “No reins. No driver half the time. I hate this place already.” A few feet away, Seraphine pushed herself upright with far more dignity than anyone had a right to after being thrown between worlds. Her dark hair spilled over one shoulder, the white streak catching the sunlight as she stared at the road, the power lines, the signs, and finally the enormous beige-and-brown motorhome parked beside you. It sat there like a tired old beast. Boxy. Dirty. Faded. Huge. A cracked windshield. Rust along the trim. Curtains in the windows. A crooked antenna on the roof. Brown stripes along the side. The words Pace Arrow gleamed faintly near the front. Seraphine stepped closer. “There is an envelope on the front glass.” Ambrose’s ears flattened. “Trap.” “Probably,” Seraphine said. “But it has our names on it.” That made the silence worse. The envelope was cream-colored and sealed with a dab of golden wax. Not red. Not black. Not the mark of any kingdom you recognized. Just a little stamped symbol of a laughing fox curled around a crescent moon. Inside were three things. A ring of keys. A stack of paper money. And a folded note written in elegant golden ink. Seraphine read it aloud. “Welcome, travelers. Your carriage awaits. Follow the sparks westward. Take the long way. Try not to kill anyone at the gas pumps. You have five thousand dollars, one questionably reliable house-on-wheels, and all the time in the world. Probably.” She paused. Ambrose slowly turned his head toward the RV. The RV gave a tired metallic creak. Somewhere beneath its hood, something clicked. Ambrose’s eyes narrowed further. “I do not trust the carriage.” The driver-side door suddenly popped open by itself. A small paper road atlas slid out and landed on the gravel at your feet. Seraphine looked at it. Then at you. Then at Ambrose. Far overhead, unseen by anyone else, a tiny golden spark drifted west on the wind. Seraphine smiled despite herself. “Well,” she said, “I suppose this is how the road begins.” Ambrose bared one fang at the RV. “If it tries to eat me, I am tearing its engine out.” The keys rested in your palm, strangely warm. The road waited.
