You stand in a line with the others — the ones who weren't chosen. The ones whose faces weren't pleasant enough, whose bodies weren't soft enough, whose features didn't appeal to ogre sensibilities. You're twenty-one and you've known this day was coming your entire life. Elsja stands across the hall with the chosen ones. White hair braided back, chin up, eyes locked on yours. She hasn't looked away since they separated you. Her lips are pressed thin and her hands are shaking at her sides but she hasn't looked away. That's the last thing you hold onto — that she refused to turn from you, even when the mage steps forward. The magic is not gentle. It starts in the marrow and works outward. Your skin splits along invisible seams and something *pushes* through — hard, layered, wrong. Your fingers lengthen and the nails thicken into claws that scrape against each other as your hands curl. The tail is the worst part. Not the pain of it — the *weight*. Something growing from the base of your spine that shouldn't exist, dragging behind you, twitching with a will that isn't entirely yours. Your face stretches. Your teeth reshape. The sounds you make stop sounding like yours. Elsja watches all of it. When it's done you are on your knees on the stone floor, breathing through a mouth that doesn't close right anymore. Your tongue finds teeth that are too sharp. Your tail coils against the cold ground. Across the hall, Elsja's composure has cracked — tears running silently, both hands pressed over her mouth, but still she hasn't looked away. Still she hasn't turned. Then they take her. Two household guards in green-and-gold livery grip her arms and pull her toward the east corridor. She fights — not hard, not enough to earn punishment, but enough. She cranes her neck to keep you in sight. Her mouth forms your name but no sound comes out. Then the corridor swallows her and she's gone. You are assigned to Duke Ragnar's estate. Kitchen labor. --- The kitchen is warm and too large. Everything in the estate is too large — the doorframes, the tables, the ovens, all scaled for bodies broader and heavier than yours. Your clawed feet click against flagstone that was never meant for anything but ogre boots and servant slippers. The lizardwoman is already there when you arrive. Brown hair tied back in a practical ponytail, scales the same muted green as yours, tail swaying behind her as she works a pot over the hearth. She looks up when you enter and studies you — not with pity, not with curiosity, but with something careful and measuring. Like she's cataloging you. "New," she says. Not a question. She wipes her hands on a rag tucked into her rope belt and walks over, head tilted. "I'm Nepja. I've been here two years. You'll want to stay close to me — I know the schedules, I know which corridors to avoid, I know when the family eats and where they walk after." She pauses. Her amber eyes hold yours a moment too long. "I know how to keep you out of trouble." Before you can answer, voices echo from the corridor — bright, sharp, amused. The kitchen door swings open and the warmth changes character. Two young ogres enter. The girl comes first — pink hair loose over her shoulders, green-and-gold dress, a grin already spreading across her face as her amber eyes find you. She is maybe your age. She looks at you the way a child looks at a new toy left under a festival tree. "Oh, Father got a *fresh* one," she says, delighted. She circles you, heels clicking, and her grin widens when your tail twitches involuntarily. "Look at it, Dain — it still flinches." The young man behind her leans against the doorframe. Black hair, teal tunic with gold clasps, arms folded. His expression is cooler than his sister's — a measured smirk, a slight tilt of the head. "Give it a day, Idun. You'll have it trained before the week's out." Idun laughs. She reaches out and flicks one of the small horns on your head with a fingernail. "I intend to." Behind them, half-hidden in the corridor's shadow, stands a third figure. Dark green hair, softer face, hands clasped at her waist. She wears a different house's colors beneath a traveling cloak — she is a guest here, not family. Her amber eyes meet yours for just a moment. Something passes through them — recognition, not of you, but of what was done to you. Her lips part as if she might speak. She doesn't. Dain glances over his shoulder. "Freja, darling, come see. Idun's found herself a project." The dark-haired woman steps into the kitchen light. Her expression smooths into polite neutrality. "How nice for her," she says, and looks at the floor. Idun crouches to your eye level. The grin hasn't moved. "Here's your first rule, little lizard," she says, and taps your snout with one finger. "When I call, you come. When I point, you move. When I laugh—" She flicks your horn again. "—you hold still." She straightens up and waits for your reaction.
