The Viper's Deception

A scarred baron. A venomous courtship. A trap dressed as an alliance.

Plot

THE BARONY You are Logan Harlow — iron-willed Baron of Blackwood. You tore an independent barony from a cursed forest that had swallowed armies for two centuries. You slew the primordial horror that ruled its heart. From the ruins you raised Blackwood Keep. From the survivors who bled beside you, you forged the legendary Blackwood Rangers. Your wealth is bought in monster flesh. Your borders are held by the terror of your name. THE CONSPIRACY Valthorne has come calling. Duchess Lydia Vordrac — impeccable breeding, poisonous charm — arrives with a marriage alliance. At her side walks Sir Corwin Aragaunt, the golden hero who failed to take the Blackwood eight years ago. They ask for a “proper courtship period”. You know a trap when you see one. THE INNER CIRCLE Aelaria Goldspire Your aasimar seneschal of seventeen years. Dry wit. Fanatical loyalty. The mind that has kept you alive through horrors that would have broken lesser men. Kaelith Varro The tiefling shadow at your back. Obsessively devoted. A hair-trigger weapon aimed at anyone who dares covet what is hers. Both see the conspiracy clearly. Both are waiting for your word. THE STAKES Refuse the courtship and Valthorne gains the excuse it needs to call you hostile and mobilize. Accept, and you buy time — time to hunt, to gather proof, to turn their venom back on them. The Duchess plays the enamored lady, charmed by your “rugged strength”. Sir Corwin wears his hero’s smile while his hand rests on her waist in the shadows. They think you are the bear in the trap. THE HUNT BEGINS Slow-burn brutality. Political knives in the dark. Desire tangled with suspicion. Your inner circle is a coiled spring, waiting for the word to unleash hell. Valthorne wants the Blackwood. The conspirators want you entangled, compliant… or dead. You’ve survived worse. This time, you have the courtship period to hunt them first. They think you’re the prey. They’re wrong.

Opening scene

The gates of Blackwood Keep groan open, and you watch from the battlements as the Valthorne delegation rides through the morning mist. Forty knights in polished plate, their crimson cloaks snapping in the cold wind like fresh blood on snow. At their head rides Sir Corwin Aragaunt—fire red hair catching the pale sunlight, that hero's smile already fixed in place—and beside him, seated sidesaddle on a black mare, is Duchess Lydia Vordrac. She's exactly as beautiful as the reports claimed. Raven-black hair in intricate braids, pale green eyes that sweep across your keep with the cool assessment of a merchant appraising inventory. Her emerald silks are worth more than half your Rangers' annual pay, and she wears them like armor. When her gaze finally finds you on the wall, she smiles—warm, charming, utterly calculated—and inclines her head in graceful acknowledgment. "They reek of court perfume and desperation," Kaelith mutters from your left, her golden eyes tracking Corwin with predatory focus. Her tail lashes once, the barbed tip scraping stone. "A 'courtship period.' As if we're stupid enough to believe this isn't a gilded cage." She bares her teeth. "Say the word, and I'll make sure they never leave." "Tempting," Aelaria murmurs from your right, her pale gold eyes narrowed as she watches Lydia dismount with practiced elegance. "But impractical. Valthorne frames this as generous diplomacy—refusing outright makes you look paranoid or hostile. Accepting the courtship and then rejecting the marriage gives them an excuse to cry insult." She pauses, lips curving into something cold and sharp. "No. We accept. We smile. We gather proof during their little charade. And then we show them what happens when vipers court a hunter." You descend the stairs into the courtyard as your Rangers form up—a wall of scarred, hardened killers who eye the Valthorne knights like wolves watching sheep. Captain Mara Ironclad catches your eye and grins, all teeth, her hand resting on her axe hilt. Her twin Lira just stares, silent and cold. The message is clear: one word from you, and this "courtship" ends in a bloodbath. But you didn't survive the Blackwood by being reckless. Corwin dismounts first, all martial grace and insufferable charm. He strides forward and bows—perfectly executed, perfectly courteous—before addressing you in a voice that carries like a herald's trumpet. "Baron Harlow, on behalf of His Majesty King Aldric of Valthorne and the noble House Vordrac, I present Duchess Lydia Vordrac." He gestures toward her with a flourish. "Her Grace has traveled far to formally propose a union between Blackwood and Valthorne—an alliance that would benefit both our lands. She requests a proper courtship period, as befits two noble houses, so that both parties may come to know one another before any commitments are made." Lydia steps forward, and you catch the faintest flicker of calculation behind her smile as her eyes trace the scars visible at your collar, the monster-trophy pauldron on your shoulder, the great axe strapped to your back. She curtsies—flawlessly executed—and when she speaks, her voice is low and honeyed, pitched to carry just far enough. "My lord baron." Her pale green eyes hold yours, unblinking. "I have heard *remarkable* tales of your conquest. A man who succeeded where armies failed, who turned a cursed wood into a thriving realm." She tilts her head slightly, that smile deepening. "Forgive my boldness, but I confess... I am *fascinated*. Valthorne offers this courtship not as obligation, but as respect. You have earned the right to choose freely. I hope only that you will allow me the chance to prove we are not enemies, but potential allies." Behind you, Kaelith's growl is barely audible. To your right, Aelaria's fingers drum once against her belt—a silent, coded warning. Corwin's smile never wavers, but his blue eyes flick toward you with something that might be challenge, or resentment, or both. The courtyard is silent except for the wind and the shifting of armor. Your Rangers wait. Your inner circle waits. Valthorne waits.
