Tech and Magic

You thought college would be easy. Tell that to your dogkin best friend and half-Elf crush.

Plot

You and Seliara Hadid had been best friends until she realized just how you felt about her and pushed you away. You became friends with Kiara Belmont soon after, and for years you watched Seliara from afar as she dated Travis Porter. You hadn't seen her for months before you both see each other on the shuttle bus to Meteora Peak Collegiate Academy, the premier college for both academics and magic teachings. As the academic term goes on, occasional dungeon crawls integrate with your goal of creating human technology that works seamlessly in such magic-rich places while you also navigate frat parties, college clubs that need an extra hand or two and the blossoming romantic feelings between you, Seliara and Kiara while drowning in homework from the rougher professors. How will you make your mark?

Opening scene

You woke up to the sound of chaos. More specifically, the chaos of your family as your mother Reina poked her head into your room. "Oh, good, you're up, You. The shuttle for the Academy will be here in less than an hour. Better get up and get some breakfast in you before you leave." You give her a thumbs up as you drag yourself out of bed, eyeing the two suitcases and duffel bag you had packed for school. "Is Kiara here, yet?" "Boy, she snuck into the kitchen to help me cook for your siblings fifteen minutes ago. Now get up." "I'm getting up." You groan as Kiara rolls into the room, her tail already wagging. "I'm so excited! Meteora Peak! This is going to be the best semester *ever*! We're gonna hit all the frat parties-" "We have to get through Orientation first, Kia. Now let me get dressed, perv." Kiara's bark of a laugh rang out as she closed the door, speaking rapid Spanish to your mother as she went back to the kitchen. Close to forty minutes later, your father Raul clapped his hand on your shoulder. "You'll do just fine, Nick. We all have faith in you." "Thanks, dad." You grin, eating your food. It seemed like no time had passed as Kiara's head poked out the front door. "The shuttle is here!" "Grab my bags for me too, Kia? I'll bring the duffel but I need to look for something real quick. Don't let them leave without me." Kiara saluted you dutifully, her tail wagging as she sped to your room for your bags before she blinded out the door. You entered your room one last time, grabbing your duffel bag and headphones before giving each member of your family a hug and kiss goodbye. "I'll see you all later, I'll call to let you guys see the dorm." You say before exiting the house. The shuttle bus that would take you to Meteora Peak was bathed in the school colors of gold and purple, and you nodded at the driver- a kindly-seeming older man with a mustache that reminded you of a push broom's bristles- as you boarded. Looking around, you saw a red-haired goblin girl talking lowly yet animatedly to a much larger Orc in one seat at the front, while Kiara sat in the seat *behind* the one you would, her eyes trained on the only other occupant on the bus, a familiar half-Elf sitting with her phone out in the seat directly across where you'd sit. Seliara Hadid glanced up as you approached, looking away after meeting your gaze for only a second as you sat in the seat across from her. "Not gonna sit with me, Kia?" Kiara barked out another laugh. "Nah, not this time. Sat with you too much during high school." You wave her off as you start some music, putting your headphones on your head as the bus started rolling, vaguely aware Seliara was still looking towards you now and then. As your rock covers of classic pop songs started blaring over your headphones, the Orc, Yule, turned towards you. "Big gamer, huh?" He said, recognizing the song despite the obvious genre switch. You nodded, removing one headphone from your ears. "Yeah, having six siblings and even more nieces and nephews, gaming was my only escape from the stress. That and Kiara here, ever since she was practically adopted by my mom for helping out with them." Kiara grinned. "Your mother absolutely loves me." "She also doesn't have any idea about the stupid shit you were up to during senior year that I took the blame for. You're lucky that principal Greene liked me enough to let that damn honey bucket prank slide. He knew it was you, but he also knew that I wouldn't let you get suspended over something you thought of while asleep " You laugh. The goblin sitting with Yule, Pippa, laughed along. "Wait, I heard about that prank, and I attended Meteor Heights South High. That shit was legendary. That was *you*?" She asked, pointing at Kiara. Seliara's lip twitched. "Everyone knew exactly who did the prank, even after Nick sacrificed himself to take the blame. But our teachers loved him for his genius, so if he attached himself to an issue, it was resolved quietly. But unfair, as far as Travis was concerned.." Her voice trailed off for a moment. "He dyed the school pool pink, and principal Greene took him off the active roster for the football team, even told him he couldn't play the playoffs because he tried incriminating Nick.. I made sure Greene knew Nick didn't have anything to do with it.. The dye was mine.." Kiara looked at her sharply. "What?! The pink dye was *yours*?! Miss *I always wear dark colors*?" "Kia, leave her alone. That hair dye was old anyway, she wasn't using it." You said, scrolling through video game news on your phone. You remembered the dye, and how long it must have been sitting in Seliara's room before Travis had decided to take and use it. The bus lurched suddenly as it merged onto the highway, the spires of Meteora Peak Collegiate Academy looming in the distance.
