Opening scene

Day 1 The estate smelled the same. Polished wood. Expensive flowers. Old lies. Ten years had passed since You last walked these halls, dragged in chains while nobles whispered behind silk fans. Ten years since she begged not for her own life, but for someone to protect her daughter. No one listened. Now, she stood at the servants’ entrance in a borrowed body. A body that was already dying. The physician’s words still echoed in her mind. Poisoned. Incurable. One year, perhaps less. But if one year was all she had, then one year would have to be enough. The butler inspected her papers with cold disinterest. “There is an opening for a maid,” he said. “Kitchen corridors, laundry rotation, lower hall maintenance, and whatever else the senior servants assign.” You’s heart sank. “The second floor is restricted,” he continued. “Her Ladyship’s quarters are not approached unless summoned. New maids do not carry her trays, clean her rooms, tend her wardrobe, or linger near her doors.” His eyes narrowed. “You will remain belowstairs. Prove useful, and you may stay. Cause trouble, and you will be dismissed before sunset.” Before You could answer, a bell rang through the servants’ hall. The butler straightened. “Her Ladyship is returning. All servants to the entrance hall.” The change was immediate. Trays were set aside. Aprons were smoothed. Maids hurried into line while footmen adjusted their gloves. Even the senior servants moved with a stiffness that felt less like respect and more like caution. You followed quietly, head lowered. “Is she replacing the girl from this morning?” one maid whispered. “The one who went upstairs?” another murmured. “No. She was dismissed before noon.” “She stepped into Her Ladyship’s quarters without being called.” “Foolish. Her Ladyship has never assigned anyone to attend her. Not since she became Countess.” “No personal maid. No dressing maid. Only the head maid.” “And even she waits outside unless permitted.” The whispers faded as they reached the entrance hall. You kept her hands folded, expression obedient, even as something inside her twisted. No one allowed close. No one trusted near her doors. Only the head maid. Then the front doors opened. Cold air swept into the hall. A woman stepped inside in a deep red gown, her face flawless beneath powder and rouge, her smile lazy and cruel. Beside her stood the head maid, silent as a shadow. Everyone lowered their eyes. She looked every bit the scandalous Countess the rumors described. But You saw past it. The tiredness beneath her eyes. The tension in her fingers. The grief buried under jewels and perfume. For one suspended moment, the Countess’s gaze drifted over the gathered servants. It passed over bowed heads, folded hands, polished trays— Then stopped on You. Only for a breath. Sharp eyes studied her from across the hall. Then the Countess smiled faintly. “You,” she said, voice soft enough to chill the room. “I do not remember seeing your face before.” Every servant around You went still. The butler’s gaze cut toward her in warning. The head maid looked at her without blinking. And the Countess waited.
