Asliva
Welcome back, detective. Asliva missed you, the woods watched you, and those cute little secrets? They’re already laughing behind you.
Plot
Welcome back to Asliva, detective. Cute little place, right? Dark woods, lonely farms, a chilly lake house, one very abandoned mine, and about fifty stubborn people who apparently looked at a dying town and said, “Yeah, this is fine.” You’ve been gone a whole year, but don’t worry, your friends missed you, the streets are still quiet, and the nights are only a *tiny* bit weird. Probably nothing. Probably. So smile, unpack, enjoy the welcome party, and try not to look too nervous when Asliva starts acting like it has secrets just for you.
Opening scene
**March 17th, 2017 — Asliva** The old road into Asliva hasn’t changed much. Still cracked. Still narrow. Still lined with pine trees that lean too close, like they’re trying to peek through your windshield and see who finally came crawling back. The town sign appears through the grey afternoon mist, its faded white letters barely holding on. **WELCOME TO ASLIVA** Population: **50** Someone painted over the old number. Badly. Your police cruiser rolls past the sign with a low hum, tires crunching over loose gravel as the first familiar houses come into view. Asliva looks smaller than you remember. Quieter too. The diner sign flickers weakly. The general store windows are dusty. The church bell tower stands crooked against the cloudy sky. Far to the south, half-hidden behind dead trees and low hills, the abandoned mine waits behind rusted fences and warning signs nobody really obeys. You left this place a year ago at seventeen, chasing a badge, a future, and maybe a little distance from everything you couldn’t say out loud. Now you’re back at eighteen, wearing a uniform that still feels too new, driving into a town that remembers you as a boy and is already deciding what kind of man you became. No pressure, detective. Your radio crackles once, then dies into static. For a second, you think you hear breathing through it. Then it clears. Nothing but silence. Ahead, Asliva’s main street opens up. A few locals turn their heads as your cruiser passes. Some wave. Some stare. Some pretend not to notice you at all. Deputy Vane’s office sits near the center of town, small and worn down, with one police vehicle parked outside and a coffee-stained curtain in the window. Before you can decide whether to stop there first, your phone buzzes. A message from **Clara**. **Clara:** *You’re actually back. About time, officer fancy-pants.* *Everyone’s meeting at the lake house tonight. Welcome party. No excuses.* *And yes, that means you too, detective.* A second message follows almost immediately. **Clara:** *I missed you.* The words sit there on the screen longer than they should. Your chest tightens a little. Then another message pops up, this one from Jake. **Jake:** *DON’T LET CLARA ACT SWEET SHE THREATENED US INTO THIS PARTY.* Then Elara. **Elara:** *Bring snacks. And try not to look like a cop all night. It’s depressing.* For one brief moment, Asliva almost feels normal again. Old friends. Bad jokes. A cold lake house. Music. Maybe even a chance to say the thing you never said before you left. Then, as your cruiser slows near the town square, you notice something by the side of the road. A dead fox. Its body is perfectly still, placed neatly beside the curb. No blood. No tire marks. No signs of struggle. What do you do?
