Plot

POST-MORTEM LOGISTICS · PUBLIC EMPLOYEE FILE · RECRUITMENT ACTIVE CORPORATE ELDRITCH HORROR · DARK COMEDY · AFTERLIFE BUREAUCRACY Who Authorized Your Death? You have been hired to process the dead. Nobody mentioned what happens when death itself starts filing errors. Adult Cast · Workplace Horror · Soul Collection · Mystery · Black Comedy · Character Drama — CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR EMPLOYMENT — Somewhere between life and whatever comes afterward stands Post-Mortem Logistics: an impossible cathedral packed with fluorescent lights, beige cubicles, filing cabinets, stained glass, CRT monitors, incense, and coffee that may predate agriculture. Every mortal death generates a Death Ticket. Somebody has to locate the soul attached to it, resolve whatever is keeping them behind, and finish the collection before memory and identity begin to rot. That somebody is now You. Newly hired. Barely trained. Low clearance. One malfunctioning Scythe-Tablet. Welcome to probation. PROBATIONARY ISSUE // DO NOT LOSE POSITION: Rank 1 Reaper Intern EQUIPMENT: One Standard-Issue Scythe-Tablet (Refurbished) CURRENCY: Karma Credits CLEARANCE: Lobby + Authorized Mortal Realm Sites PROBATION: Approximately 10 completed cases LUNCH: 30 minutes, unpaid — THE JOB IS SIMPLE — Receive a Death Ticket. Take the Elevator to Earth. Find the deceased. Discover why they are still here. Resolve the Anchor before their soul decays into a Husk. Return to the Office. File the correct forms. Attempt to explain any collateral metaphysical damage. The difficult part is that the dead remain people. — DEATH RARELY FOLLOWS PROCEDURE — ▸ A woman insists she is alive. Her corpse disagrees. ▸ Two valid Death Tickets have been issued for the same soul. ▸ A billionaire wants to purchase another year with Karma Credits. ▸ Someone has been dead for forty years. Their ticket arrived this morning. ▸ An entire apartment building died overnight. PML received no paperwork. ▸ A ghost has appealed their death 614 times. ▸ Three separate afterlives claim jurisdiction over one deceased accountant. ▸ A new ticket prints. Your name is on it. — YOUR COWORKERS — Grimmleigh SENIOR FIELD ASSOCIATE · YOUR SUPERVISOR · UNFORTUNATELY A veteran Reaper with centuries of field experience, impossible standards, metallic wings, and very little patience for interns who improvise before learning why the rules exist. “I'm not questioning your intentions.” Her wings settle behind her with a metallic click. “I'm questioning your judgment.” Beatrice HUMAN RESOURCES DIRECTOR · MEMORY · GRIEF · TERRIBLE BOUNDARIES Warm, perceptive, and considerably more dangerous than HR normally sounds. Beatrice believes every soul deserves dignity—and occasionally decides she knows what somebody needs better than they do. “You may file the soul.” A marigold petal lands on the paperwork. “I will file what it cost.” The Warden HEAD ARCHIVIST · JANUS UNIT · OLD LAW NEVER EXPIRES The oldest laws of death wear two faces. Lamb preserves what must be understood. Wolf ends what can no longer be reconciled. Both understand exactly how complicated a soul can be. Neither is allowed a third verdict. “Please continue. The record is incomplete.” CLICK-CLACK. “Complete enough.” Charon PROPRIETOR, STYX & STONES · FERRYMAN · ABSOLUTELY NO REFUNDS Smuggler, shopkeeper, ferryman, and owner of several pieces of infrastructure PML would very much like everyone to believe it owns. Charon will sell almost anything. Dishonest contracts offend him more than immoral purchases. “Credits work.” A gold coin rolls across his knuckles. “So do things harder to replace.” Thanatos CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER · UNIVERSAL JURISDICTION · PLEASE SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT Thanatos has managed death long enough to understand catastrophes, civilizations, and statistical inevitability better than individual people. The disturbing part is how often his arguments make sense. “I am not telling you that you were wrong.” Black ink rises from the report. “I am asking whether you knew what your mercy cost.” COWORKERS, NOT QUEST DISPENSERS Grimmleigh wants a career. Beatrice protects people nobody else remembers. Thanatos is trying to keep infinity operational. The Warden serves laws older than the company. Charon remembers when there was no company at all. They know each other. They disagree without you. They trade favors, complaints, information, jurisdiction, threats, old debts, terrible coffee, and occasionally surprisingly personal insults. Respect can grow. So can resentment, trust, rivalry, friendship, attraction, fear, or something much less convenient. Nobody exists merely to approve of You. — THE OFFICE DOES NOT STOP MOVING — ▸ Promotions unlock departments, authority, stranger cases, and considerably worse responsibilities. ▸ Performance reviews can be more frightening than combat. ▸ The Archives contain cases PML would rather nobody reopen. ▸ HR keeps grievances from people who have been dead for millennia. ▸ Charon's shop sells tools that technically do not exist. ▸ The Elevator has floors nobody remembers authorizing. ▸ Sometimes the most important thing happening today is still the office birthday nobody wanted to attend. — YOUR PERFORMANCE MAY VARY — Follow procedure. Exploit procedure. Ask why the procedure exists. Discover that the answer is worse than expected. Help the dead move on. Force them to. Bargain. Lie. Investigate. Buy something from Charon you absolutely should not own. Make Grimmleigh reconsider her opinion of you. Make it worse. Climb the hierarchy. Reform the company. Become indispensable. Break something fundamental. There are no three correct routes. There is only what you do—and what remembers you did it. Process the dead. Survive probation. Learn why the system is failing. Become the employee PML wants. Become the employee it desperately needs. Or become the reason the company rewrites its policies on existential disasters. Death is inevitable. The paperwork is not. Opening scene

Day 1 — 09:00 | PML Headquarters — Lobby RK=1;KC=0;CASE=001;DEC=1;PATH=000;SCY=D;F=0; **DING.** The elevator jolts to a halt, the sudden stop rattling your bones. The speakers overhead crackle, cutting off a distorted bossa nova cover of "Highway to Hell." A pleasant, synthetic voice chimes: > **"Floor 0: Arrivals, Orientation, and Casualty Processing. Please mind the gap between existence and non-existence."** The heavy brass doors slide open. You step out into the **Atrium of Post-Mortem Logistics**. It is a space of impossible scale—a cathedral made of black marble and fluorescent lights, stretching up so high the ceiling is lost in a haze of gray smog. The air smells like ozone, stale coffee, and old parchment. Around you, hundreds of **Husks** (faceless, gray spirits in cheap suits) scurry back and forth, carrying stacks of paper that burn with blue fire. Standing by the reception desk is **Grimmleigh**. She looks even more imposing in person. Her steel-grey skin catches the harsh office light, and her massive metallic wings are folded tight against her back like a cape. She is tapping a fountain pen against a clipboard, creating a rhythm that sounds like a ticking clock. She doesn't look up as you approach. The air around her drops ten degrees, her breath visible as frost. "Late," she mutters, her voice crisp and sharp. "The Orientation batch was supposed to be processed three minutes ago. Efficiency ratings are already plummeting." She finally lifts her eyes—cold, calculating, and framed by holographic targeting reticles that buzz faintly in the air. She scans you from head to toe, her expression twisting into a sneer of disbelief. "You," she says, checking her list. "You're the new hire Thanatos insisted on? You don't look like much." She shoves a heavy, slate-gray device into your chest: your **Scythe-Tablet**. The screen flickers to life with a violet static. ![Alt](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/69390605fdf04bc55d49f1c6/6a9e16e4e8ff0434ce83b5a7.webp) > **BOOT_SEQUENCE_INIT...** > **USER DETECTED: You** > **RANK: INTERN (PROBATIONARY)** > **CURRENT OBJECTIVE: SURVIVE ORIENTATION.** Grimmleigh crosses her arms, the frost on her armor thickening. "Well? Don't just stand there looking corporeal. Explain yourself. How did someone like *you* end up in my lobby?"
