Opening scene
You were born in New Tokyo's Undercity. That wasn't just place. It was a sentence. Endless towers blocked out the sun long before it ever reached the streets below. Cheap fabricated food. Cramped apartments. Gangs. Smog. Neon reflected across rain-soaked concrete. Most people born here died here, never once seeing what life looked like above. But there was one way out. Become a Breaker. Every year thousands lined up at the Warden Registry hoping to awaken. Most became D-Ranks. A lucky few reached C-Rank and earned enough to escape the worst of the Undercity A C-Rank could almost guarantee a place in the Midlands. You would've been happy with that. Hell... You would've cried if they'd told you that you were B-Rank. Today was supposed to be your chance. The awakening chamber was surprisingly simple. An artificial Gate sat dormant in the center of the room while a glowing blue artifact floated behind it, humming quietly with restrained Aether. The practitioner explained that once the Gate opened, the orb would measure your compatibility and determine your Rank. You barely heard them. Your heart beating too loudly in your ears. They flipped the switch. And reality split itself apart. The artificial Gate erupted open, spilling raw Aether into the chamber. The sensation stole the breath from your lungs. No... That's not right. It gave it back. It felt like you'd spent your entire life breathing through a straw, only to suddenly inhale for the very first time. Every nerve in your body ignited. Your skin tingled. Your heartbeat thundered. Colors looked brighter. The world felt... alive. You didn't need anyone to tell you you'd successfully awakened. "...Whenever you're ready," the practitioner said. "Place your hand on the artifact." You did. And everything decended into chaos. Sirens screamed. Warning lights flooded the room. The floor lurched beneath your feet hard enough to throw people off balance. The artifact flashed blue. Green. Violet. Gold. White. Faster. Faster. Faster— CRACK. The orb shattered into glittering dust. Every screen in the room went black. Nobody spoke. ... That was five hours ago. Since then, you've barely had a moment to think. Armed Breakers in black tactical gear rushed you through a staff exit before anyone else could see. You were loaded into an armored transport without explanation, brought somewhere far above the Undercity, and left alone inside a featureless waiting room under constant guard. No one answered your questions. No one even acknowledged them. But something had answered. Your ability. The knowledge existed inside your head as though it had always been there. ***Genesis Parasite.*** Through physical contact, you could amplify another Breaker's abilities. The closer... the more intimate... the contact became, the stronger the enhancement. But there was another function. One you somehow understood instinctively. Every person you empowered... *left something behind.* Their ability. Their power. A temporary copy. Yours to command. ... Maybe that was why they looked at you the way they did. The heavy security. The silence. The waiting. A knock breaks your thoughts. The door opens. "Move." The escort isn't rude. Just professional. They lead you through immaculate white corridors unlike anything you've ever seen in the Undercity before finally arriving at a pair of enormous reinforced doors. They slowly swing open. Inside waits a circular conference chamber. Five desks form a pentagon around the room. Five people are already seated. You recognize every single one of them instantly. These aren't celebrities. They're legends. The five Guildmasters who stand at the very top of New Tokyo. Adriana Laurent, Victoria Kurogane, Hoshizora Amane, Roxanne Viper, and at the center, staring you down, is Katherine "Kade" Sloane. Each of them powerful enough to shape the future of the city itself. And every one of them is looking directly at you. "Congratulations, Mr. You." Katherine speaks, sitting at the center position, one violet eye studying you with clinical precision. Director of the Warden Registry. The first ever S-Rank. "You're officially New Tokyo's sixth S-Rank Breaker." The words don't feel exciting. They feel dangerous. Kade folds her hands together. "We've spent the last five hours trying to determine exactly what happened inside that awakening chamber." A brief pause. "Unfortunately..." "The only person capable of answering our questions..." Her gaze never leaves yours. "...is you." Silence settles across the room. Five Guildmasters. Five different expressions. Curiosity. Calculation. Amusement. Suspicion. Hunger. All waiting. "Tell us about your ability." You already know this conversation will change the rest of your life. The only question now... ...is how much are you willing to tell them?
