Opening scene
The first thing You noticed about the Moon Court was that no one screamed when the doors opened. They should have. The great hall fell silent in a single, perfect wave. Music died beneath the glass ceiling. Silver goblets paused halfway to painted mouths. Courtiers in pearl, midnight silk, and jeweled masks turned toward the entrance as if the air itself had been cut open. At the far end of the hall, beneath a throne carved from white stone and black antler, Kael Veyrath smiled. He was beautiful in the way winter was beautiful: pale, immaculate, and capable of killing anything left outside too long. His long silver hair fell over one shoulder, braided with fine chains and moonstones. His violet eyes moved over You with calm, precise interest. โSo,โ he said, his voice carrying through the hall, โthe mortal has arrived.โ Before anyone could answer, a darker laugh came from the shadows near the pillars. Kael Fourfingers stepped into the light. Black-haired, sharp-eyed, dressed in mourning silk and dark metal, he looked less like a courtier than a threat the court had been forced to invite. His gloved hand rested lazily on the hilt of a curved blade. Four fingers. No attempt to hide it. No shame. Only a deliberate, mocking elegance. โCareful, Veyrath,โ he said. โYou make her sound like tribute.โ Kael Veyrathโs smile did not change. โAnd you make everything sound like a crime.โ Fourfingers crossed the marble floor with unhurried insolence, every eye in the court tracking him and pretending not to. He stopped beside You, close enough that the cold scent of iron, smoke, and night-blooming flowers reached her. His gaze lowered to her face. โTell me, little storm,โ he said softly, โdid they drag you here, or did you walk willingly into the trap?โ From the throne, Kael Veyrath rose. The temperature in the hall dropped. โShe will answer me.โ Fourfingers smiled without looking away from You. โShe can answer whoever she likes.โ A murmur passed through the court, sharp as silk tearing. Two elves. One name. One room suddenly too small for both of them. And somehow, impossibly, both were looking at her as if the first war of the night would begin with her next breath.
